11-17 early check-in

I'm heading off to deer camp for Illinois shotgun season early tomorrow morning, so thought we would start our check-in early this week. The weather looks pretty crummy until Sunday, but we'll see what happens. That is pretty much my weekend plans. I get to spend some time with some old friends, eat like a king, play poker every night, and sleep in a drafty old abandoned house trailer....can't wait!

What does every one else have planned for the weekend?

Rifle opener Saturday and rifle will run until January season end, so basically free for all from here on.  Need to break in my .308 with a kill this year.  Last I checked gonna be cool Saturday morning in the low 30's then warm up to 70 something Saturday.  I doubt there is a buck around our farm this year that would be a wallhanger for me and so unlikely I will kill a deer, but there are some yotes and beaver needed to be killed.  Then again, have had deer we never got pics of just show up so who knows and there are a few standing fields of beans left to be cut yet too so who knows what might get bumped around.  Did see a nice buck cruising in an uncut bean field this morning on the way back from taking the kids about a mile as a crow flies from our back field.  I will probably go Saturday morning if the wife does not want to and then she can have all the rest of the weekend if she wants it.  There are a few around I would not mind seeing Catrina or our 12 year old daughter get a crack at.

Sat for about a 45 minutes this morning after taking the kids to school, was about 8:15 when I climbed up in a stand and within a few minutes had a spike come in on a grunting sequence, he had both sides when I had seen him earlier this week on the way to check cams, now missing one side.  About 15 minutes later another grunting sequence and within a minute had a 4 point come from the opposite direction.  15 minutes later had a yote come through, but I never had a chance to get my gun up before he was out of my view.  Tried lip squeaks and can call, but no luck.  Had quite a bit of work to do so had to call it quits not long after the yote went through.

Now is definitely the time to be in the stand as much as possible here.

Yup and I have to work, but i did see a nice 4x4 heavy beam at about 25 yds while coming out of a gas plant near Edson, Ab yesterday. I realy want to take my rifle but against company policies so go on days off, spend to couple of days and release some buck bomb doe in estrus that usually brings them in if they are in the vicinity, yes I did try to snap a pic of that 4x4 but he quickly pranced off to the bush. It looked to me like a 3 or 4 year old.

Counting the minutes here until 12:30, then I'm outta the office and heading right to my stand for this evenings hunt. I haven't been out since our rifle opener on 11/11. We had a inch or two of snow yesterday, and today is blustery with tonights forecasted 15 ... so I will be back out in the morning as well. I managed to catch a glimpse of a small buck opening day, I've had a lot of activity on camera with 8 Does and 3 small legal bucks and a nice wide 5 hanging around. My freezer has been empty for a while, so if it's legal I'll try to take it. Good luck and straight shooting everyone.
