Maine Hntr
it's been a pretty long season of seeing some deer but not getting a shot opportunity, that changed tonight with the blackpowder in hand, pretty straightforward sit, fresh inch of snow yesterday and it was all tracked up this afternoon, sat on a field edge and about 4:30 this guy came out and gave me an easy shot, ran 50 yards and I heard him crash... surprisingly, the shot did not pass through so blood was pretty minimal, I put a perfect broadside shot on him though and walked up on him only 30 minutes after the shot. 5 pointer, estimating the weight at 125-130. wtnhunt
Congratulations. What are you shooting, powder amount/type and bullet? Have had several here that we did not get pass through's, usually hit some bone somewhere between when that happens though.

MUDRUNNER
Congrats! Way to get it done in the late season. That's some nice scenery. I love hunting with a little snow on the ground.

Seen that just a few times here using 115 grains loose triple 7 and 240 grain xtp mags. Strange how sometimes you can hit shoulder and get an exit but hit the much lighter rib bones and the bullet not exit. Seems best as I recall the few I had that did not exit were also with closer shots, which kind of goes against the expectation in knowing the velocity is higher closer. Maine Hntr
yeah that's why I was kind of surprised, I figured for sure with a well placed shot as close as I was to him It would pass thru... oh well, it did the trick, I just don't know if I would have found blood had there not been snow on the ground. Have a FB buddy that hunts Mass pretty hard, he did well this year nice 8 ptr if I recall. Seems like some good hunting there. I'm in VT, didn't have as much time to get out this year as I have in the past ... saw 1 legal buck and several does. It was so warm during the Oct archery season, not much was moving at all. Congrats again, nice deer!
Maine Hntr
I can't complain about the hunting much in mass, the only thing is where i am it's just small pockets and it gets very heavily hunted in a lot of locations, very tough to find property where it hasn't been trampeled through, that's one thing i really enjoy about getting up to maine for, hunting on a property that is ours and gets minimal pressure. Turkeygirl
Congrats on a great buck and nice shot! I have a TC Omega Z5, that thing loves Hornady SST 250 gr with 2 50 gr. triple 7 pellets. Last season and this season took a doe at 100 yards, complete pass through. Shot a nice buck this year also with it, pass through at 40 yards. The gun loves this load...I like it also ;-)
Turkeygirl
Forgot to add a doe I took this year with the TC, almost similar shot to yours, just a little lower and right on the crease....destroyed her heart but didn't have a great blood trail...I think when they are running the shoulder/hide keeps blood from blood pouring out. When I cleaned her out her chest cavity was just full of blood.

Turkeygirl
Yes, give them a try, you might be suprised ;-) I got a CVA Accura V2 this year, tried some hornady sst out of it, wasn't grouping how I'd like so didn't take it hunting. Going to try a different load or two and a new scope.
