Winter has arrived

Woke up to 4 degrees F this morning. We have a chance to get a below zero temp for the first time in a long time this Saturday night. Wish I still had some skates that fit me so I could play a little pond hockey.

I used to live about 60 miles northwest of where Albert Lea is on that map. This is a heat wave compared to what the temps are up that way lol. They have several days in the forecast where it won't get above 0 for the high. The ice should be getting nice & thick for the snowmobilers & ice shanties.

Had a 14 here this morning with n wind steady at 12 and gusting to 16.  Some local windchills were negative.  Sure here with the bottom ground around and the damp air it was probably much cooler than where the temps were taken in town.  Our heat has been running non stop, keeps kicking to aux heat, the heat pump cannot keep up.  Probably gonna look into adding a stove or furnace before next winter.

heard alot of mobile homes down south got pipes frozen up....remember those days well, and I dont miss them either!

Only thing I have that concerns me in cold weather is the Outdoor Boiler...so far this year I had no problems, we burn wood pellets now instead of corn. You still need to blow the fire box clean and the flues and chimeny, do that about every three weeks.

Water freezing with the well is a concern with this cold being ongoing for at least a week.  Have a drain in the basement that runs out to the field.   Heat pump drain and basement sink run into that drain.  Anyway leaving the cold water side in that sink in the basement running just to keep water flowing from the well house.  May have to turn on the light in the well house tonight.

lol.  Not quite that bad.

Supposed to get into the upper teens for a high today, will have to get back out and try to dethaw water troughs, these animals are gonna need water.

Left water running steady in the basement and ran a heat lamp over night in the well house.  Frost line here is 2 ft, ran my lines a little deeper when I put them in.  All our plumbing is inside the basement, so the well house is really the only place we have to worry about freezing up.
