wtnhunt
Yeah, forecasts here been all over the place. Had some single digit temp forecasts here for next week with highs not getting out of the 20's. Real feel here this morning in town according to accuweather had us at 2. Figure out here it may be a bit cooler.
hammerforged
Gotta love heat tape - only way I can warm up my anvil on mornings like this. These are the days I enjoy working in the forge. Just have to thaw out the sluff bucket.
The Bug House
Ayuh ... I had -14 on the mercury this morning.
MUDRUNNER
Woke up to 4 degrees F this morning. We have a chance to get a below zero temp for the first time in a long time this Saturday night. Wish I still had some skates that fit me so I could play a little pond hockey. I used to live about 60 miles northwest of where Albert Lea is on that map. This is a heat wave compared to what the temps are up that way lol. They have several days in the forecast where it won't get above 0 for the high. The ice should be getting nice & thick for the snowmobilers & ice shanties. wtnhunt
Had to go help someone get their truck started earlier, had 18 actual temp at 10 am on the car thermometer. It was 21 in town, had 0 on my phone as the real feel on accuweather. Gotta go break some ice for our cows to get water now.
Ravin R10 man
I dont miss the waterer and animals etc.....frozen silos, I did have gravity flow manure system, just had to turn on the barn cleaner and feed cows while that ran.... wtnhunt
Had a bull calf this morning when I was coming back in trying to get water from a frozen drain at the end of a culvert under my driveway. Had to bust the top 3 inches of ice out of the water troughs. I don't run any trough heaters.

ALAN
It's cold in iowa as well...This winter is not easy for me I plow snow we have hardly got any may be 2" tops if that....alot of my mobile homes pipes are freezing....between sunday and yesterday I've taking 20 calls due to frozen pipes they call to see if I shut water off if they don't have water it's good chance they have frozen pipes
Ravin R10 man
we left machines run all night last eve, and again this eve; was in machine by 4:30 a.m. today, it was warm and toasty and ready to roll
Maine Hntr
its brutal here tonight, can definitely see how quickly this cold air affects your bare skin, went out to do a couple things quick and at first it doesn't feel like much but after only 5-10 minutes you can begin to feel the burn on your hands and face, nasty! wtnhunt
Had a 14 here this morning with n wind steady at 12 and gusting to 16. Some local windchills were negative. Sure here with the bottom ground around and the damp air it was probably much cooler than where the temps were taken in town. Our heat has been running non stop, keeps kicking to aux heat, the heat pump cannot keep up. Probably gonna look into adding a stove or furnace before next winter. Ravin R10 man
heard alot of mobile homes down south got pipes frozen up....remember those days well, and I dont miss them either! Only thing I have that concerns me in cold weather is the Outdoor Boiler...so far this year I had no problems, we burn wood pellets now instead of corn. You still need to blow the fire box clean and the flues and chimeny, do that about every three weeks.
wtnhunt
Water freezing with the well is a concern with this cold being ongoing for at least a week. Have a drain in the basement that runs out to the field. Heat pump drain and basement sink run into that drain. Anyway leaving the cold water side in that sink in the basement running just to keep water flowing from the well house. May have to turn on the light in the well house tonight. Muff
Crazy cold here right now....been a 5 day stretch so far and looking like maybe 3 more days of it....tonight with wind chill they are calling for -28F....glad I am leaving work to go right home for the night. wtnhunt
You know it's cold when your whiskers freeze less than 5 minutes after being outside. Put hay out this morning and busted some ice in a drain with the loader. Drain refroze by the time i came back by.
Ravin R10 man
like this?
wtnhunt
lol. Not quite that bad. Supposed to get into the upper teens for a high today, will have to get back out and try to dethaw water troughs, these animals are gonna need water. Left water running steady in the basement and ran a heat lamp over night in the well house. Frost line here is 2 ft, ran my lines a little deeper when I put them in. All our plumbing is inside the basement, so the well house is really the only place we have to worry about freezing up.
Ravin R10 man
we run our lines here at 8 ft down then I dont plow the snow off over the top of them either....
