refund or exchange?

Ordered a hooyman cordless tree saw from midway and it came in today.  I also ordered an extension for it.  Thought it would make a handy tool for limbs I normally have to use a pole pruner for.  Unfortunately about half way through about a 1 inch oak limb the thing started smoking from the motor.  The switch was acting goofy to begin with, was cutting on and off while holding the switch down.  Less than a minute of use and it was done, nothing.  Battery fully charged and nothing from the motor.  The chain spun by hand(of course with the battery off the saw).

So I called midway to see how they wanted to handle this problem, I can send it back for an exchange or I can get a refund, already printed the shipping label to send it back for exchange but having second thoughts.  At a bit of a dilemma on this though, because I have to take it to a UPS store to send it back, closest UPS store is 30-40 minutes away depending on traffic.  So I am out gas either way.  Freaking shame midway won't issue a call tag to have UPS pick it up at my door.  Kinda irritated with them and very disappointed in this brand new piece of junk.

Anyone else have any experience with these things?  Was not at all impressed with it what little I was able to get out of it, very weak.  What would you do?

I'd call midway, and see if they wont issue a call tag at your door, you should not have to  go out of your way to return it.

I did call Martin, I told the girl the nearest ups store was about 30 miles away.  Oh, but they are going to credit back my card the $14.79 shipping I am getting hit with for return shipping after they determine the product is defective.  I may call back and try to get a manager.  NOT happy with midway at all.  All the more reason I think I am just gonna send it all back and get a refund.  I should have just waited until I could afford to get an echo, will cost more than twice as much but at least they have local service and also have a 5 year warranty.

Only other powered pole saw I have used was an echo gas saw, and there is NO comparing.  Sadly I was really hoping to put this thing to work this weekend ahead of our velvet hunt next weekend.  Gonna be manual sawing I guess.  : (

Forget talking with a manager.....go higher up the chain.  Talk with someone at the corporate level about the issues you are having and the inconvenience their products failure is causing you.  Don't hang the phone up until they agree to have a call tag for pickup at my front door and waive the return shipping fee.

I've wondered how good those saws actually work. They push them pretty hard on a lot of hunting shows.

If it were me I think I would just get a refund too. If the next one you get is a turd you'll be doing this all over again.

Yeah, the video on their site makes it look like these saws will cut good sized limbs pretty quick.  My luck the next one I would get would probably make it just past the warranty period.  Maybe the motor on this was a refurb, dunno but definitely not impressed.  Honestly the saw felt flimsy too.

Guess if there is any bright side to this at all is that at least it was not after the exchange/refund period was up.

Sounds like something was VERY wrong with yours from the start for it to have trouble cutting a 1" limb.

I've had one for a year now and no issues at all with it.  Great tool for trimming limbs and VERY glad I have it.  RPM's on mine are almost as fast as a gas motor pole trimmer and less than 1/2 the weight.  Mine cuts through 4" or less limbs real fast.  A 2" or less limb is like a hot knife cutting through butter.  On limbs larger and out to 6" it's slower but so is a gas motor pole saw.  I also have the optional extension so I could reach out to 13.5'.  I bought an extra battery when I got mine but it's not really necessary.  One battery last a long time.

I gave Larry my number in the email I sent early this morning, have yet to hear from him or anyone from midway for that matter.   They lost one customer over their handling of this, I doubt I will ever do business with them again.

This saw never even got anywhere close to the rpm's of a gas saw.  I would guess it may have gotten a tenth the speed of the echo I used in the past.  I could have cut the limb in a lot less time with my corona hand operated pole saw.

There was definitely something terribly wrong with the electric motor of yours right from the start!  I didn't order mine from Midway.  I went through Amazon.

Evidently from some of the reviews I am seeing midway has been selling a known bad batch of these things, some people have had to go through 3 to get one that even works, they have more patience than I do.

After looking a little more at saws, I ran across this https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-40-volt-Lithium-Ion-8-in-Cordless-Electric-Pole-Saw-Battery-Included/1000180467.  Looks real similar in specs and appearance to the hooyman, but has a 5 year warranty on the saw and 3 on the battery, and a lowes no hassle return policy.  Lowes is a heck of lot closer than the ups store too.  Guess weighing the cost of a replacement battery down the road vs cost of gas saw.

Don't think Larry appreciates my business, or from the looks of it anyone's, ironic?

I get a ton of emails from them, but never really minded, that was actually what led me to the "great deal" on the hooyman saw.  Gonna put them on the spam list as soon as this order issue is resolved.  If for some reason I do not get back full credit on my order, I will be in touch with my card company, (cabelas) and will put the order in dispute.  May have to file a bbb complaint too.  Bad thing is it will be Tuesday before I can even get to the closest ups store, so I have to look at this box laying in my living room floor until then.

Crash and burn midway(not too big to fail).   I am done with them.

I also have a lighter weight black and decker electric saw too but it's 20V.  The pole is plastic making it lighter but the RPM's are a lot slower.  It can only go to 9 1/2' with it but since it's ligher, it's easier to use to cut limbs from the stand.  With plastic poles, you can't add an extension to it for more length.  The battery amp on the Kobalt 40V saw in your link is a lot lower (2,5 amps) than the Hooyman (7.3 amps I think) so I suspect it will run out of juice quicker.  I also have a dewalt electric chainsaw 40V with a 7.5 amp battery.  For light duty, it's great.

Not something I absolutely had to have, more a convenience and something I could use around the farm to make things a little easier on my aging back and shoulders.  Was really a bit of an impulse buy on the "deal" midway had on them.  That in mind, I may just hold off until next year and get an echo, or check into a stihl.  I have echo gas saw and straight shaft string trimmer, both have the 25.4 motor, have been very happy with them.  I know home depot carries the echo and has the 12 inch pole saw for $479, rural king has one for $399, think that is a 10 inch bar.  I did have to have my echo chain saw worked on under warranty and it was covered no questions asked, only downside was it is 40 minutes away to that shop, which is also our kubota dealer.  Pretty sure I have seen where stihl is in the rechargeable saw market now and I fully trust either of those brands.

The lowes(kobalt) brand did also have a 10 inch 80 volt saw.  Think it was about $80-90 more.  I will do more research before I buying another.

Got a reply this morning from Troy at midway, he basically said Larry was too busy to read email messages.

I didn't read every response but did you try calling Hooeyman?

When my trail camera died I called the manufacturer and they gave me a new one.  It might be worth a try.  There must be a 1-800 number in the distructions?

I did not attempt to call hooyman.  I already took the package to the nearest ups store, cost me about $15 in gas and traffic was a huge headache, but it is done.
