I love History

Took a trip to Greensboro, NC to visit relatives for a couple days. while there the wife and I went to Guilford Courthouse National Military Park - sight of one of the decisive battles of the Revolutionary War. The Guilford Militia just so happened to be encamped and a few of them put on a demonstrations of the firing of their weapons for us in attendance. One of the cousins we were visiting told us to be sure and find Chet's gate while we were there. One of the gates to the Park was dedicated in memory of Charles Burchette Allen my wife's youngest cousin who was killed February 4th 1975 while serving in the Navy.  While there we stopped in to the Visitor's Center and of course I had to look at the sharp pointy things.  This one intrigued me tremendously.  Cabinet card said it was either an American or British Officer's Dagger. Does not look like any dagger I have ever seen, blade is only 8 inches long and only .5 inch wide at the guard.  It is also 4 sided.  I would call this a Stiletto rather than a Dagger.

Nice pics Ross. Thanks for sharing.

Would you call that knife a dirk?

What little research I have done so far refers to this type of blade as a "Misericorde" or Mercy blade - used to finish off wounded enemy.  Like a stiletto in shape but used to stab instead of cut.  May get brave enough to try making one but dang those grinds are tight, really shows the skill of the Cutlers back then when we cannot even come close to replicating what they made even with all the equipment available to us today.  This blade is only 8 inches long and only one half inch wide at the guard, the grinds/bevels on all four sides are tight and laser straight and equal in depth.  This would leave a wound channel with a "+" shaped cross section that would be impossible to heal properly.
