Congratulations on a couple of nice bucks.  Wish I could have been of some help to the team, but the season ended today and I never caught up with a buck I wanted to pull the trigger on.  If it were legal to shoot a doe I would have filled my tag this afternoon.  Saw some young bucks over the past couple of weeks and one that may have been a shooter that slipped by in a dense ice fog, nose to the ground and grunting with every step.  I couldn't see him very well as he was more of a shape moving through the fog.  Tried to get him to stop, or maybe come back, all to no avail.  The weather here has been less than favorable for hunting but that's the way it goes.  Still had a good season even with the low deer numbers and crappy weather.  I did see several dozen elk (no bulls), a wolf, grizzly bear and a couple of moose.  On top of that, I had an ermine hop up on my lap and check me out.  Even without filling a tag it was a successful season.  Once again guys, Congratulations on a couple of dandy bucks!

Well that is just about a wrap on my season. This weekend is our second firearm season, but I filled my tag during first season so will take on kitchen duties at deer camp Friday night instead. Next weekend is muzzleloader season and I don't have a tag for that. The following weekend I am out of town for my daughters softball tournament, and Christmas is the week after that. No complaints here though...it's been a good November & the freezer is full.

Ok so here is story on that buck I shot;

So all summer and fall I be watching an 8 pt growing up. Bow season comes in, so I shoot two does right off. Cams did not show any good bucks on them in daylight, so I did not hunt for a buck until first part of Nov.  I sat  during a sloppy wet snow mid Nov. I was in a spruce, and should have put up my porta roof umbrella, well I got soaked with the warm temp and melting snow. Bow got soaked, release etc.  got down that eve, put everything back in case back of Gator, parked it in shed. (in the cold), The next weekend, I decided to hit end of a wheat field that had young wheat growing up, and deer were hitting it hard, because a Dairy Farmer had emptied liquid MANURE on the cut cornfields next door. That put all the deer on this wheat, and all the bucks were chasing does.  Camera was showing daytime movement and the big buck I was after too. First time in, Friday eve., last week of bow, with gun season in a week. I get in tree, and was just getting bow set up and release on when I had several deer come in. I hung bow up on hanger, then I noticed my release was FROZE... no problem I started to blow hot air on it, and in no time it was free and working. I wanted to draw bow back, but figured I'd spook them out and bucks nearby too, (I should have done it, I knew better),!!!  ROOKIE mistake.    about 3:30 here come small bucks, spikes, forks, 6 pt. small 8, bigger 8, THEN, all the deer turn and look. I know what THAT MEANS! I GRAB MY BOW, see legs behing the balsam, a rack, a good rack. He comes in ears back, postures to the decent 8 and cocks his head as he walks in at 10 yards!  I SWING TO MY LEFT, and try to draw back, get 3/4 back and the darn bow will not break over!! I was a bit cold as a heavy snow was falling and blowing right in my face at 15 mph.....So I swing back, get bow in front of me on my knee, now I can push and pull, she breaks over and comes to full draw. I swing back and buck catches movement, turn and take 3 jumps away, turns broadside at 20 yards and stops. I get on him, aim a bit low because I figure he is on alert and may duck. I settle pin low and squeeze, arrow flies, RIGHT UNDER his  chest below HEART! He bounds  away. I sit for about 15 minutes more, deer that were with him all go out onto field. NOT HIM. I get down go check arrow, CLEAN no hair NO blood in snow. I go home. That eve, a brother was also hunting  half a mile N.W. of me on his land. I told him I missed the big 8, He goes I DID TOO!!!  I had shot at just before 4 p.m.  He said the buck came from my way at just  last legal shooting hours, walked in and ten yards. He pulls up bow to full draw, anchors, and his peep is full of snow and cant find his pins. He figured , man, ten yards, I'll just anchor and shoot, how can you miss??  Well, he did miss right under him just like I did. We named the buck LUCKY.  I sat Sat. eve, and Sun, eve. Buck was a NO SHOW... my brother hunted him NEARLY EVER DAY,  My cam not show him back in daylight. So I figured since Sat. is Wis gun season, I'd wait . I watched can all week at gun stand. Buck would come by early and late in daylight hours checking does. Thurs. a.m. was last photo I had of him, Sat morning I pull card before getting in shooting house. Slip card into card reader and scrolled thru.  I get to 2 a.m. sat morning, Lucky is heading INTO my property!  Daylight comes, only small bucks show, 6pt a small 8 pt spikes and forks.  Finally about 9:30 they all mosey off. At 10:30 I catch movement in a draw that we had Damned off for a pond when we ran cattle, and used as a road now. Immediately, saw a good racked buck walking fast. I opened my right window, and locked it, grabbed my binos, made sure it was Lucky, dropped them back down as I use a Harness. Grab .270 (one of my Dad's guns), swing out window just as he gets to middle of road and stops looks my way, put crosshairs behind shoulder crease half way up, fire to take out lungs. He MULE kicks and is gone.  NOW THE SHAKES START!!!  I wait for 5 minutes, get down, walk 40 yards to where he stood. Hair, and blood out far side, turn and follow, first jump he got  blood spurting both sides in the snow, and every jump the blood trail gets better...at 35 yards out I round a balsam and there he lays.  I look up and say, "Whatta Ya think of that Dad"?  LUCKY ran out of LUCK, and blood. Done within hours of FIRST DAY! That has only happened to me once in 49 years of gun hunting!  Gut him with a knife Ross sent me, get him hung at cooler and on the rails by noon, cut up and in freezer by 5 p.m.  Cleaned Rifle,  washed hunting clothes. Went to work Mon, Tues, Wed. that REALLY felt WEIRD!  Normally I take all 9 days off.
