Adjam5
Been putting in for about 5 years as a group and we were selected. What a blast. Out of the Savannah area, Richmond Hill. Along Fort McAllister and close to Ft Stewart. Lies one less 7'4' gator in the swamps. These gators are tough critters getting them is nowhere near like as easy as TV makes you think. For one, no hanging bait on hooks and catching them like fish, like on TV. Not in Georgia anyway. In Louisiana that is OK. IN Georgia You have to snag them and get them as close as possible before you shoot them. No easy task and MANY failed attempts. Luckily the guy who took us out knew many spots for gators and I was able to connect. They wiggle something awful when hooked. I have caught some big fish and know what a fight is like. These Gators fight ferociously. Saw tons of wildlife and even had the possibility to shoot a hog from the boat on land. That did not happen, but I was told to keep eyes on the shore also. The pigs there like crabs and other shellfish at low tides and are not too swift in the mud when you float with the tide. No hogs but a good gator. Had a great time, would love to do it again. $100 for a non resident hunting license and $250 for gator tag. No guide fees was among friends. Yes, I did get to bring some home. We did our own processing and I bought a soft sided cooler from Wally world to take with me. My 1 hour layover turned into 5 at the Philly airport because of the weather. Made it to a freezer just as it was getting squeezable. Have about 12lbs. Been looking up recipes all day. 2 hours ago, MUDRUNNER said: Man, that's awesome! Congrats! Looks like a great time. How is gator to eat? I don't believe I've ever eaten it before. Yeah we ate the first gator we caught. It was soaked in buttermilk over night, covered with fish fry crumbs and deep fried in canola. It looks like chicken, but texture is more like veal. It was incredible! If have a chance to order it someplace...do it. Time for me to buy a deep fryer.
fly
Nice job! Going to keep the skull or any of the hide?
Adjam5
Thank you. The skull was shattered from the coup de grace and I left the hide with our host. I kept all the meat. It was 1k to tan a gator hide. I'll pass. Just bought a mini deep fryer online to cook my alligator in. Can't wait to start cooking it. fly
A thousand dollars is a lot for a hide but some gator skin boots that you hunted would be pretty cool. I'm sure that would be over 2K!
Adjam5
Yes boots would have been cool or even something from the gator you shot. Rifle sling. Even the wife was interested in having something made. Those were my first thoughts too. But you have to start with a tanned hide first. POW! $1000 American right out the gate...Our host expressed interest in it so I gave it to him.
