Re: what do yall prefer

1 - Treestand (Bow)

2 - Groundblind (Bow)

3 - Spot and stalk/still hunting (Bow or Gun)

4 - Drives (Gun)

5 - Road Huntin'

By the way, my style of "road hunting" is driving around with unloaded weapons and just looking for deer. Usually done when it's really really cold, raining or the deer just don't move. I don't shoot anything out of truck. wink.gif So, don't take it as the illegal form. grin.gifwink.gif

Re: what do yall prefer

I like to hunt in the deep timber, where a truck cannot get you from point A. To point B. I'll park my truck somewhere about 2 miles from where I'm hunting. I try and park my truck where no body else can see it. I got a lot of places to go hunt that are honey holes of mine. And if I know the hunters around my town, they will search for trucks to locate and then try and slip in the woods that you are in.

I like to sit most of the time, either in a treestand or ground blind.Do a bit of stillhunting.I have road hunted many times but I was sitting in my treestand or ground blind and it was a logging road back in the woods.I have sat and watched a stretch of road(logging road)in my truck on short hunts or foul weather.98% of my time is spent sitting in wait in my stand or blind back in the woods and there ain't no driving back in there.

I like still-hunting, spot and stalk, or sit and wait, whether it be a ground-blind or a tree-stand.

I dislike road hunting

Ditto. I swore off drives years ago. I will push for my sons though. Last year I pushed a nice 9pt to my oldest son. I prefer the solitude of bowhunting.

drive around up top of a stand on your truck

Is that how your Dad does it?

I enjoy still hunting from an elevated treestand.

Do you have a stand big enough to walk around in???LOL grin.gifgrin.gif.Isn't still hunting walking slowly through your hunting area looking for game??I would say you like to sit and wait in an elevated treestand.

Re: what do yall prefer

Only in Texas (or Africa) can you ride around in a "stand" mounted on a truck. I prefer to still hunt during rifle season and occassionally I will stop and rattle/grunt. In the right snow conditions, I will follow a buck track (yes, you can tell the difference, especially when taking other signs into consideration) and often can catch the buck in his bed. If archery hunting, I usually hunt from a tree stand, but will hunt from a ground blind and in a light rain/mist, still hunting is a good option. In more open country, I also will spot and stalk.

Re: what do yall prefer

A little background for those not familiar with deer hunting in Texas:

When Ms. Pancake talks about a stand mounted on a jeep or truck, she's certainly not talking about driving down some public road or highway and blasting away at deer on the shoulders. That's illegal here just like it is in all (I assume) states. We sometimes use the mobile blinds on big ranches that cover 20,000 - 40,000 acres or more since there's no way you could put enough stands out to cover all of the good spots. With a mobile blind, you can set up quickly if you see an area that you want to hunt and there's not already a stand there. The geography also plays an important factor in this. Most of south and west Texas is extremely brushy, but there are very few big trees. That means that you have to get elevated to see anything beyond a few yards.

Now to answer her question - I usually use elevated tripods and sit and watch, or I walk the edge of canyons or the tops of ridges and try to spot deer below me.
