Weekend check in

What's everyone up to this weekend? Getting ready to head up the road to my father in laws to put his 2012 Silverado back together. Took the engine apart last weekend to diagnose why his engine light was on and running like crap. Timing chain tensioner broke and chain was very loose. Got all the new parts to put it back together for him today, should be done by dinner time.

Still need to get back and clean up around my stand. Been saying it for a month but it's been very busy with the new baby. Hoping to get some brush cleared out and the cam set up.

Hope everyone is ok from the hurricane down on the east coast! It is going to hit Nova Scotia tonight with lots of rain and 100mph winds. Know of a few members from there. Hopefully there's minimal damage.

Here. lol.

Catrina has weekend manager at her nursing home, so just me and my 2 youngest kiddos.  Hope to get yard mowed this afternoon after she gets home.

Need to do some prep work on some stands at some point but not gonna drag our son out for that.  Really mainly two stands I am concerned with having ready for this season are the two person stands.

pretty much got stands ready here, bucks have started to shed, Sometimes we lose a couple bucks when they go back home after summering here. Ash and Nate are stopping by soon for the rest of the weekend, we get to meet him for first time. Fire pit and all the fun stuff planned.

Heat index here this weekend is supposed to be between 115 and 120 so I'm catching up on some inside the house chores.  It's too hot and humid here for an old fart like me to be working on treestands.  I still have a few bow stands here in MS that I need to check before the season opens on 10/1 but I'll wait till its cooler than this.  All my new bow stand positions here are already finished so at least the harder ones to prepare are done.

Today was our archery opener and the morning started out with a heavy fog and light drizzle which made for an interesting first few hours.  I saw a dozen or so elk (hard to count in the thick fog) with a few calves getting as close as ten feet or so.  I was a little surprised to see the elk even though I am always hopeful when up in the mountains.  I did not see any bulls and although the cows and calves were talking, I didn't hear any bugles.  Elk hunting in this area is mostly a matter of being in the right place at the right time and I got lucky this herd fed through the old clearcut I was watching.  Unfortunately, if there was a bull, he passed unseen in the fog.  I also saw a couple of dozen deer over the course of the day, all does and fawns.

The rest of the week will be mostly spent hunting with the exception of Monday and Tuesday, when I will be filling in for a pharmacist who is on vacation.  In my mind next Sunday looms and I can begin my quest to fill a moose tag.

Good luck Dave.

Got the yard work done yesterday afternoon, was a nice change seeing temps around 86 with a light breeze and significantly less humidity.  Forecast for today looks like Al is sharing the heat with us this afternoon with the humidity also returning, reckon I will limit how much I do outside.  Need to spray some fencerows with a mix of gly and 2 4d, and still need to spray clethodim on my clover.  Doubt I get to doing any trimming out of the two person stand in the bottom this weekend, but don't need to let it go too long, the young sportsman deer hunt will be here before I know it.

I am not even going to hang any of my hang on stands this year, might put a single 16 ft ladder in the same tree I killed my deer from last year for Catrina to hunt if she wants to have a different wind stand for our back field.
