My season starts October 1st and I'm hunting my own private land for the first time. I put in for several public ground draw hunts every year and this is the first time I haven't been drawn for any of them. All my cards are going to be played out on 32.5 mostly wooded acres in the bluffs of the Mississippi. I did manage to get a 1/2 acre food plot in and it's looking decent for a first year. I also have 4 bucks I would shoot on camera and 1 that is my main target I've named Mule because of a forked G-2. Attached are some pics of the deer I'm after. I'm the odd one out as I hunt the northwest corner of Montana and spend most of my hunting time in still hunting/calling mode. Archery season is currently in progress, and although my primary goal is to fill a once in a lifetime moose tag, I have spotted a few nice bucks in my journeys. If not for the moose tag, I would normally be concentrating on elk at this time of year. My deer hunting is mostly a November venture, but I usually also put in a few days deer hunting during archery season. It is supposed to snow this weekend with temperatures getting down to the low 20s and that might get the critters moving. You never know how the season will play out. fly Posted October 2, 2019 Report Share Posted October 2, 2019 (edited) Opening day today - I went out for a few hours this evening. Temps at 90 degrees so I didn't expect to see anything - and I didn't. All my cam photos show the deer are only in my food plot at night so I hunted over acorns and a corn field that hasn't been harvested yet. elkoholic Posted October 3, 2019 Report Share Posted October 3, 2019 Well, my hunting has gotten a little derailed as I'm stepping out of retirement to help out with a staffing shortage at the pharmacy I used to work at. I hadn't been seeing much game movement, even with the colder weather, and maybe a little break will change my luck. I should still be able to get in a few days hunting each week. I'm looking to start getting in the woods here in Mass possibly this weekend and the next few weeks, getting a lot of pictures on cam, nothing too big but I'm looking to put meat in the freezer and points on the board first. The bucks should be starting to chase and with that I'm hoping for some more deer sightings. It appears that everywhere I have gone there are wolves in the mix, which unfortunately makes for little game movement. We definitely have a predator problem here in the northwest corner of the state. The temperature has also been on the cold side, with several mornings on the negative side of zero, making it seem more like December or January. He's not the biggest buck in my Whitetail Woods but he showed up during daylight hours and presented a nice 30 yard hard quartering away shot. The shot looks back in the pic but it exited right behind the left front leg. Got liver and lungs. He weighed 225 pounds (prior to field dressing) and I'm putting him at 3.5 years. It sure feels good to harvest a nice buck from your own ground. I saw at least two other giants earlier this week but couldn't punch my tag. I've got Friday off so i'm looking to sit both Friday and Saturday and temps are looking like highs in the 30's on both days with a little morning snow on Friday.. hopefully that coupled with the time of year has them on their feet and moving. Betcha he felt the bullet go over his back it was a very near miss. An inch or 2 lower and he would have been bagged and tagged. I notched my tag this morning on what was planned as a few hours spent in the woods with little expectation of firing a shot. Getting old and gimpy has caused me to take it easy on the day before a scheduled work day. Forget that, as a small buck following a doe came my way and he was sporting a nasty wound high on his neck. I debated shooting him for several minutes before deciding to put him down. Apparently someone tried to shoot him in the neck and was a little high to get the job done. This buck was well known to me as I have many trail cam pictures of him and had seen him on multiple occasions over the past couple of years. He was just 3.5 years old and for the past two years sported just three points per side with no brow tines. I'm not sure if he would have recovered from the neck wound, but barring an infection (it was full of dirt and pine needles) I think he would have. It was pretty nasty looking. He looks better from this side. Almost forgot to take pictures but I remembered just before the skinning started. I see Catrina has shot a dandy 8. Congratulations!
