So, I got this guy pretty early Saturday morning. It was a perfect morning, My husband, wtnhunt, walked me to the stand and within a minute after getting in the stand there was a deer moving out in the field below me. Couldn't make it out because it was too dim. about 7:30am a small spike came right in front of me about 30 yards away, he never knew I was there. He went through fence and left field. Then about 7:50am there were 7 does that came along the same path the spike went and fed in the beans and field out in front of me for about 10 minutes...then suddenly they all went to full alert looking towards my right...there he was, coming along the fence about 250 yards away. He was following a fence that ran parallel to me heading straight towards the does. I settle my scope on the 50cal Accura to a spot where there is a clearing...as he steps into the scope about 140 yards away, I squeeze the trigger. He juts forward about 30 yards and stops.... CRAP!! Did I miss him? I reload as fast as I can and he turns broadside giving me another shot.....BAM!! He drops his head and goes out of view. I message hubby and he comes to help me look for blood. We found hair where the deer was with my first shot then we find blood. After following blood for about 80 yards, something jumps up and takes off.....we back out and wait about an hour.....we go back and about another 40 yards there he was. Turns out, I hit him both times...first time was a little back and second time was in the neck. Just want to say how blessed I am to have such an amazing husband that supports me in my hunting efforts. Wtnhunt….YOU ARE THE BEST!!! Yep, told her we needed to back out after i jumped him. I could see he was struggling and figured he would not go far and lay back down if not pushed. She wanted to keep pushing but I thought best to give him a little time. I made my goal this season to be all about Allison and Catrina. Mission accomplished. We never got a single trail cam pic of Catrina's deer. I had seen that buck a few days earlier when sitting over the carcass from Allison's. I told her he was a nice buck and that she needed to sit that stand. So glad she sat in the cold that morning, he did the same thing he did when I saw him just a little later in the morning. Could not be anymore happy for the girls. They have had a good season and rifle hasn't even opened yet. Mywork has paid off this year. Maine Hntr
Checking in, still a decent amount of season left for me. Looking to either upgrade or put a nice doe down. Huckleberry, how's your season going, any other opportunities? Great contest going this year, we're neck and neck between the 3 teams, interested to see how things end up. Some big deer have hit the ground this year for the Realtree crew!

fly
WOW! Congratulations Chris, Catrina (and William for the assist) and Elkoholic! Those are some exceptional deer and I couldn't be happier for all of you. Our gun season starts tomorrow. The second rut is in right now - the first one was very early (Halloween early). Things are slowing down but still have a couple nice ones running around. Looks like great weather for this weekend. I'm really looking forward to it. Without a doubt this year has been the funnest I have had chasing these whitetails. I did shoot a dandy 8 point with my Xbow in early November and never recovered it - not even one drop of blood even though I saw the bolt sticking out as he ran off. He showed up on camera last week still alive and doing well. He was dogging a doe that ran past the camera a minute earlier. It sure looks like the bolt is still in his right shoulder to me. He's number one on the hit list.
wtnhunt
Good luck putting that 8 down Frank. We had a spike Allison and I saw with each sit that had what appeared to be an entry just above the spine midway back and an exit midway back about half way down the body. Looked like he had part of an arrow in him as well and the bottom hole was still red like it was not closed up. Had trail cam pics of him early November. Have not seen him when I have been out solo and no more trail cam pics of.
fly
First half of gun season is over. My son got a nice 12 point. It’s posted in the deer hunting room. What a great year!
im your huckleberry
Went again on the weekend. Started out good the only bucks i seen were at 500 yds with a 15 mph constant crosswind with gusts up to 25. Didn't try to many if factors. Seen one buck chasing a doe so even with this little warm up in temp didn't slow them down to much.
im your huckleberry
My season ended with the Burris zee rings not holding properly, the scope sliding and missing a 10 point at 50 yds before I noticed that it happened. Time to give up on anything Burris had it sighted in 1inch high at 100 yds, 18 inch lbs for torque that is the max and the 270 win isn't a heavy recoiling cartridge oh well he will grow another year. Not that it does you any good now with the missed deer, but you need to contact Burris about your issue. I have had a few times I have had to get in touch with them for optics and they have always been great. I have never had any issues with Burris rings or mounts. im your huckleberry
Just got told a trick here I'll try it and let you know how it works, smear a very thin coat of chevy gasket maker on contact surface of the rings. Going to try locktite as well before I toss it in my spares bag. Temperature may have had something to do with it to 75° to -1° expansion contraction may have had an effect too. fly
The Smoke Pole season ended yesterday without a bang. Had to call it at 3pm as heavy snow sleet and freezing rain came in around noon. Our archery season goes on for another month but I probably wont hunt more than a few more days. Lessons learned this season. 1. The turnip/kale/clover food plot primarily brought in deer at night and had no daylight pictures of mature bucks. I stopped hunting over it in early November. Next year my farmer (neighbor) will put in crops (corn / beans) and leave some in the back near my stand. He can harvest the acre and keep any profit. I save time and money putting in a food plot. 2. The mature bucks used the trails I created in the middle of the woods at all times of day and night from October 28th-November 28th with pictures almost daily. I will extend some of these trails in the off season and stay out of the woods in the pre-season except to trim shooting lanes in early September. 3. The rut started early when a cold front came in on October 27th. I'll schedule time to be in the woods those last few days of October in case a cold snap happens again in 2020. 4. Will be moving a couple stands to more strategic locations for wind direction and observed deer movement. 5. I have a 2 buck to 1 doe ratio (or could be 3 buck to 1 doe). This is opposite of everywhere I've hunted before and makes for an exciting rut with cruising bucks during daylight. I allowed the does to get a free pass this year and will likely keep it that way next year. My neighbors shoot plenty of does. I believe I suggested you do that, after you bought the ground. Think it will work well for you, AND the farmer
fly
Yea, at first I wasn't making a lot of friends with some of my neighbors - met this neighbor in early November as he was blocking the lane to get into my place. Instead of being a jerk I got out and just started talking and now here we are.
