JimT
Re: which rifle for elk The 30/06 with either a 165 or 180 grain bullet that stays togather will work. If you want more punch maybe step up to a .300 or .338 win mag. I would just use the 30-06 though.
David_218
Re: which rifle for elk For Elk, I'd go with your 30-06 and 180 grain bullets. However I consider the .338 Magnum an Ideal Elk load.
OJR
Re: which rifle for elk I have seen a lot of elk taken with either the 270 or the 30-06. Both of them have made an elk very dead! Whatever one that you shoot the best and have the most confidence in is what you should shoot!
AJ
Re: which rifle for elk I agree with most of the others. I would take which ever gun you like the best. Either one will do the job.

JimT
Re: which rifle for elk That I would not try {25-06}. It will kill an elk, but just does not have enough punch in my book.
AJ
Re: which rifle for elk [ QUOTE ] Could you kill an elk with a 25-06? If so what bullet would you use? [/ QUOTE ] Sure, if everything was perfect. The 25-06 would not be my choice for elk, though. I would start with the .264 Win Mag or the .270 Winchester (very similar) and go up (ballistically) from there. For short action cartridges, the .260 Rem and 7-08 are the bottom line in my book (prefer bigger) and the .308 Win, 358 Win, SAUMs, and the WSMs will do the job just fine. Shaun_300
Re: which rifle for elk either of your rifles would take an elk down no problem. i'd take whatever gun you like better and are more accurate with. its the shooter that decides what can take an animal down, not the rifle a well placed shot from either of those guns won't have a problem. i happen to be a magnum boy and i'd take my .300 WSM
Guest Colorado Bob
Re: which rifle for elk Willie-----I've used the 30/06 for better than 20 years hunting elk here in Colorado. I use 180 grain bullets----I site in 2" high @ 100 yards. Bullets-----I've used Hornady, Core-Lokts & Power Points-----in both SP & Round Nose. Those work just fine at the velocity of the 30/06. If you want to use a "Premium" bullet----I would look at the Federal 180 grain "Nolser Partition". If you use the 270----Go with Premium bullets. 150 grain "Nolser Partition" would be my pick. What gun has the best glass? 1 last piece of advice is start now on "cardio-conditioning" Elk country is rough country & combine that with altitude---you'll run out of steam pretty quick. Good Luck---CB Also on the 25/06 for elk hunting---I would NOT.

JimT
Re: which rifle for elk When I first read his post I was thinking he meant the 25-06 would be the bottom choice for long action and the .260 and 7mm08 would be the bottom choice for short actions. I could be wrong, but thats how I read it. I personally would choose a 7mm-08 over a 25-06. When comparing a 120gr 25-06 to a 140gr 7mm008, the 25-06 is faster, but the 7mm08 has more energy. The bigger bullet in this case gets the nod.
Guest lilcrackshot
Re: which rifle for elk I would go with the 30-06 pump. Assuming it is a Remington they are very reliable and the 30-06 with 180 or even 220 grain bullets will put an elk down for good.
Norm Sauceman
Re: which rifle for elk Both will be OK.. I use a 300 Win. Mag... but like ALL shooting..Bullet placement is 95% of the success. That is Norm's percentage chart too...

I would definately take the 7-08 over the .25-06 for anything bigger than caribou.
