vaccine or no

Will there be an approved vaccine before the end of 2020?

So, say a covid vaccine is approved and available this fall or winter.  Do you take it or no?

If you have serious health concerns that put you at increased risk for complications do you lean more towards taking it?

Think I will be taking a pneumonia vaccination for the first time ever in my life but seriously doubt even if my cardiologist strongly suggests it that I would trust a covid vaccine that has been rushed through.  Given the past history of the efficacy of flu vaccines, and the known that this coronavirus has been able to mutate makes me skeptical of how effective a vaccine may even be.

When I had my kids in for the flu they said they were just starting to see people who had gotten the flu shot coming in with the flu.  So the flu shot they have been using for years still isn't completely effective.

Last time I had a flu shot was in 05, I got pretty bad off that fall/winter and ended up with a bad case of bronchitis.

Will definitely be interesting to see how things work out.  To see if the guinea pigs they are giving trials to now develop an immune response and what kind of side effects they have.  Sure sounding like there could be 100 million doses ready this fall for the most vulnerable Americans.

It may be an employment mandate like the flu vaccine is for me. If I want to work I am required to take the flu vaccine. I would not be surprised to see the same with COVID.

Good point.  I know the speculation of 100 million doses was said to be for elderly and most vulnerable.  Think healthcare workers were also mentioned. Be interesting to see for sure.

Heard earlier this week that dexamethasone is showing promise as a treatment.  With the numbers of infected continuing to tick back upwards in much of the country, hopefully the death toll can be limited with more knowledge of what is working.

Injecting a foreign substance into the body without at least a documented 90+% success rate makes little sense to me.  I seriously doubt there will be a vaccine available this year and if there was, said vaccine would not have had sufficient time for adequate testing.

Yes, many workers will be required to get the vaccine when/if it becomes available.  Will it help?  Maybe.  Will it be 100% effective?  No.

Dexamethasone is a potent steroid that limits inflammatory response which gives patients a change to fight off and recover from the virus.  I do not think it directly has any effect on the virus.  If your immune system is totally shot it probably won't do much more than prolong the inevitable.

Right, it helps control the inflammation.  Pneumonia had been being one of the primary issues and lung inflammation leading to breathing complications.  Think last I heard they were saying remdesivir in combination with dex was showing promise as a therapeutic.

Problem is a lot of people with underlying issues could not use that regimen.  Last fall my regular Dr, who was will aware of my cardio issues put me on Prednisone.  Almost put me in the hospital, sent my bp into dangerous levels.

I still plan on getting pneumonia vaccine, no way I am doing a covid vaccine if it becomes available.

btw, good to see you back around Dave.

Supposedly astra zenica and pfizer will likely have an approved vaccine this fall and production will make it available for US citizens possibly 100 million for free of charge(er uh paid for by US taxpayer dollars).  While they have concluded the vaccine in trials is creating immune response to the coronavirus, there has not been a long enough period to show what side effects are likely.  Another concern I would have is what is the health status of the trial study, are they generally healthy and likely to have healthy immune response to exposure without a vaccine.  Guessing elderly or people with underlying health issues are not part of the test group????

Also caught part of a story that suggested that vents were in many cases a mistake, causing lung over expansion.

Most of the initial testing on humans involves healthy male med students, and sometimes prisoners or military personel.  Those subjects are carefully chosen based on certain criteria that will maximize desired results and minimize side effects and they are usually well paid.  That is why you sometimes see less than stellar results once a vaccine or medication hits the market to the general public.  Even birth control pills were first tested on male subjects to assess safety (the side effects must have been interesting).  If a person wishes they can apply to be part of a study.

I seriously doubt there is a vaccine ready this year.  The cost?  Much like the free tests you can get, somebody has to pay, and it is either the taxpayer (many of whom are now unemployed and not paying taxes) or an increase in insurance premiums down the road.

Manufactured in China or India most likely.  An interesting aside, GSK has it's Shringrix vaccine manufactured in Belgium but part of the vaccine (the adjuvant) is produced in Hamilton Montana.  So, like your vehicle, it may be manufactured in one place from pieces that came from somewhere else.

When someone is dying you try anything that seems logical to prevent them from dying, and sometimes it backfires.  Like chemo and cancer, the treatment can be worst than the disease and may not work or, at best, prolong the inevitable.

That is good to know.  So the test groups are not a good representation of a mixed group.

They should test these vaccines on congress!

One way or another we still pay for it, whether it be through taxes or increased costs in other medicines that manufacturers pass along to consumers.

Sure thousands have been spared by using vents, however in many it seems that from the reports that once they were bad enough to need a vent they were unlikely to recover.  Interesting though that there was the early on screaming about vent shortages by coumo before he ever needed them and he ultimately did not even need them.
