elkoholic
He must have felt safe and comfortable there, so making a bed next to a food source was a no-brainer to him. I have seen several beds that bears have made and usually they are surrounded by piles of scat. Years ago while elk hunting I walked in on a large grizzly that had dug a depression in the ground and had filled it up with grass. The area around the bed was pretty torn up from him dragging the grass into the bed. That grizzly appeared to be drunk as he got up and staggered off a little ways to lean against a tree. He had been eating gallons of huckleberries (evident in the many large piles around the bedding area) and they were probably fermenting in his stomach. So, yes, he was making a bed, and he was just lounging there enjoying himself. I watched many just rolling around and stretching but have never seen one in the process of making a nest. wtnhunt
Don't really have any experience with bears, but that is interesting. Last fall I did get a sequences of young buck bedding under one of my cameras for a couple hours at a time for 3 or 4 days. Best as I could figure with that was that he was on the trail leading up to that field edge waiting for does.
need2hunt2
The guide took me in one day when he baited to show me what the bear was doing. At that point I wasn't sure if he was just trying to protect the food for himself or what was going on. He's a decent bear, looks right around the 6 foot mark. When we went in the path takes a couple turns and then your 15ish yards from the bait. The bear would just stay there until just before we turned the final corner, then he would walk back about 20 yards in the woods and sit there and watch us. The guide moved some of the moss so he could bait the barrel and then when we left the bear walked right back in. When we pulled the camera I was surprised at how much moss he had torn up and moved. Pretty cool.
