Michael Jordan effect

Although the idea of using "famous" people to market products did not start with MJ, it was certainly a sounding board for more endorsement deals that raise the price, but not the quality of a product.  He has currently been paid over 1.3 billion dollars by Nike since 1984.  That for endorsing a sneaker that sells for as much as $400+ dollars a pair and is made of questionable material in China, Vietnam, or Indonesia by people who are payed a few dollars for working an 18 hour day.  He did not even wear Nike shoes prior to that deal.  Greed, and a lack of ethics is all I see.

Unfortunately, this has also spread to the hunting and fishing world and only adds to the cost and not the quality.

Does a famous person in the commercial or advertisement influence your decision to purchase a product?

No sir.

Sickening to see the salaries of sports figures, then many like you mention sign ridiculous greed ridden contracts for companies.

While some do a little good with what they "earn", you don't hear much of most of them "giving back".  Wonder how many sports figures are still getting paid, despite not being able to work due to coronavirus, or getting cut pay?

I should probably stop there and not get started on the greed in the music and movie industries.  Sadly most of those same wealthy out of touch individuals are the ones that today's kids follow on social media platforms.

Well,

When I was about 10 I really, Really wanted a Ted Williams rod and reel from Sears. I liked Ted - as much for his Navy service (my uncle met him in WWII and thought he was great) as for his career in baseball.

I did get a new rod and reel for my birthday but it was the Sears Job and not the Ted Williams model.

I was pretty disapointed but Dad showed me how the two rods were identical and the TW one just had a decal on it and cost two dollars more. He also said that TW had likely used the same one I had and liked it a Lot so they just put his name on it. I learned a bit about marketing then and it has helped me save a few bucks in life.

I did use that rod and reel a LOT and caught a lot of fish with it. Mom even said I had paid back the cost of that  birthday gift many times over with all the fish I caught for the family. I grew up on a lake and fishing was all there was to do.

I liked that rod and used it till I joined the Navy. Then my little brother lost it while I was gone and that's the end of the story except I'm still not swayed much by celebrity endorsements and even less when it comes to picking the President.
