I forgot the tag and posing pictures, but I’ll make sure to get the next one. I’ll be focused solely on Indiana this year and have a few targets to chase. We have a great cold front hitting next week and I’m excited for the movement it will bring! Here are a few pictures of the food plots for this year. ny_gun Posted September 27, 2020 Report Share Posted September 27, 2020 He was the buck I was looking for but I was not sure if I would see him opening night as he had not shown on the camera for the 2 or 3 days before the opener. I was in the stand at ~4:45. At ~6pm I had a young doe come by but not hang out long. At 6:59 I saw a buck as he walked in around the edge of the standing corn heading my way. I carefully lifted my binoculars as there were a couple similar 8 points on camera and expected it to be one of them. I could not believe he was the 1st buck I saw. He headed right to me with one of the smaller 8 points right behind him. I expected to get a shot right away and immediately drew. He proceeded to not offer a shot and I was forced to hold for 2+ minutes (confirmed by trail camera pictures) as the smaller buck must of seen me drawing and proceeded to stare me down. Once the smaller buck finally relaxed I was able to let down - the bigger buck had no idea what was going on. I then had to watch them feed at ~20 yards for 25 minutes as he managed to stand with his vitals behind the one branch in between us. After feeding he decided it was time to move on and walked past my stand at ~8 yards on a mission. After watching him for 25 minutes I needed to draw, swing around, settle in on aim, and try to stop him in the matter of seconds. I watched my arrow drive into him up to the fletching as he ran out of site within a few steps. After I replayed the shot in my head I realized I saw him start to turn his head when I tried to stop him but he never did stop. The shot was a hair further back than I hoped but still felt good. After giving him some time my father and I started the tracking. The blood started immediately and had bubbles but was dark so we suspected 1 lung and liver. After a short trail we decided to give a bit more time and come back a couple hours later and look in the dark. We ended up finding him not too far from where we stopped trailing him. He was dead in some tall grass on the edge of the creek that ran past my stand. This was my first velvet buck after hunting in Kentucky every year (except 2019) since my first trip in 2014. I haven’t hunted since the 16th due to hot temperatures and nothing moving on my cameras. I was able to film a 4/5 year old 8 on the 16th. He’s been on the farm for 3 years and I’m hoping my dad can kill him this year. I’ve attached a photo of him last year. He added some mass and grew the another point on his left main beam. I have a target deer on one farm that will be relocating in the near future so I’m getting more aggressive than usual. Unfortunately the wind wasn’t right to hunt him tonight so I went on a scouting mission on another farm. Tonight was good hunt. I had a 3 year old 10 and a few does come around. Even though he’s not a shooter, he certainly got my heart pumping when he first stepped out. FWIW- I’m a big believer in hunting when conditions are favorable and there’s an app called DeerCast which I use religiously. Maine Hntr Posted October 4, 2020 Report Share Posted October 4, 2020 I actually have Deer Cast as well, downloaded it last year, although I don't pay for the subscription to get the future forecast, only able to see 2-3 days out and it doesn't show you the best time of day out further than the current day. hoosierhunter Posted October 6, 2020 Report Share Posted October 6, 2020 My buddy came with me this evening and we sat over a green food plot with the hopes of taking a doe. About 6PM we had a single doe come out at the far end, but she left the plot shortly after entering. Then about 6:30 we had two adult does enter the plot at about 80 yards and feed. After about 20 minutes I heard something behind the blind but didn’t pay much attention to it thinking it was a squirrel or something. About 5 minutes later I hear it again and turned around to see a doe walking literally right beside the blind at 5 yards and she cane from dead downwind of us. Thankfully I was running the ozonics and we both are extremely scent conscious so she didn’t have a clue we were there. She entered the blind right in front of us at 20 yards and began to feed. After a few minutes she turned and the grim reaper broadhead went to work. She definitely painted the turnips leaving the plot and piled up in my clover plot about 100 yards away. It was also fun for me to trail this doe because this is the first time I’ve got to track a deer through my warm season grass planting. You can’t tell from the video but that grass is about 5-7 feet tall where she ran in. Pretty cool to walk through that and see all the sign. hoosierhunter Posted October 17, 2020 Report Share Posted October 17, 2020 Last night my neighbor killed my #1 target buck, Crawdad. He was 5.5 and grossed 174 6/8ths as a typical 13. I saw him walking out the last night I hunted which was the 7th. We left for a family vacation on the 8th and I didn’t get a chance to hunt him again. Surprisingly, he was killed a full hour before dark working a scrape about 400 yards from where I last saw him. My focus will now shift to hunting several different bucks across my farms. However it’s over with now ( I lost ) and rifle season starts October 30. I’ll be hitting hunting camp on the 27 th and I’ll be putting in lots of hours in the stand. I’ll keep ya posted ? Our commercial lobster season doesn’t open till November 30 so I’ve got a couple weeks left at camp. Came home last night headed back tonight. I’ll keep ya posted ? Saw a possible shooter this morning and hunting another farm tonight due to cell cam MRI. The weather is going to turn very warm for the next 6 days so that might subdue movement a little bit.
