timing

Got in the stand about 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, this scrapeline is about 185 or so yards away to the far side.  Catrina took the week off, and she got a deer on Saturday, so I got to go some this week.

It was warm and drizzling on and off.  Anyway, I had to wonder how I missed seeing this deer and then realized time fell back but I did not set my cameras back.  One of the better bucks we have gotten on camera this season, not sure I would have shot him but still would have been nice to get a better look at him.  It is early in the season, hopefully timing will break my way at some point.  On his feet at 2 pm and 71 degrees, would think he should be around nearby unless someone else shot him.

  • 2 weeks later...

Possibly saw this buck this morning at 10:45 while walking.  Was either him or another wide one we haven't gotten pictures of.  Had checked a beaver trap and was walking the old river channel.  He was bedded in some thick stuff less than 5 yards from the channel.  He trotted off about 5 yards, stopped long enough for me to see his antlers and ears over the vegetation and then eased slowly off.  Pulled my rifle around but never could find him in the scope and did not have a round in it either.

Won't get to hunt again until Saturday.  With him bedded there at that time of the morning hoping he will still be close by.

Just the way it has gone for me this season, just can't seem to catch a break. Catrina has to work this weekend due to being short rn's.  I may get a little afternoon time, but we'll see.

Have heard rifle shots just off our property almost every morning this week, and every Saturday I have gotten to hunt since the season started.

Looks like the cwd plan to kill them all is gonna take its toll here.

Seems it continues with this season of close calls for me.

Got to get out this morning for a bit.  Catrina has a meeting at church so I did not stay in the stand much past 8.  Saw a yote 25 minutes before legal shooting light.  Had 3 does come through early on and worked right past me into the bottom.  Heard something wading in the water from the direction they came from but nothing else I could see came through.  Does came back out and fed for a bit in the bottom.  Old grey faced doe jerks her head up and is on alert watching back across the wet field.  I can hear steps in the water but never could make out anything, too many trees in the way.  Neighbors dog barks and the doe finally had all she can stand and takes off.

Never heard anymore activity in the water and by 8 the wind had picked up.  Decided I would walk down to my beaver trap and check it before coming back to the house.

Had my rifle in my hands, about three quarters of the way to the trap I come around a bend in the old river channel out from behind some brush on the bank and all I see is hind end and antlers.  Immediately shoulder my rifle and let out a couple meeehs, as I find him in my scope he leaps a couple times and is across the river and behind some brush.  Might have been able to have squeezed off a Texas heart shot, but did not try.  He is a good buck, better by far than anything we have gotten pics of this year.  Definitely better than the one in the pics above.

Pretty sure he stopped right after he got behind the brush.  Never heard any splashing or running.  He was off our property by now, so just walked on to the trap and walked back to the house.  Did walk slowly watching for him in the way back, no sign.

Figure he was probably what the old doe was watching.  Where he was, I never would have seen him from my stand.  Wind will be right this afternoon for that stand, so plan to go back.
