Catrina's opening morning "muzzleloader" buck

Tennessee put our county in high risk for cwd for this season.  That meant that during the muzzleloader season you would be allowed to hunt with rifle.

So, I sent Catrina to our back field with her .243, loaded with the handloaded hornady 100 grain interlocks.  I expected for her to see some activity on the scrapeline where we had been getting daytime pics of a decent 8 pt.  That line is about 170-185 yards away from the stand.  Our soybeans this year were a bust, so no draw with them in the field, but deer still hit the scrapes.

She had not been in the stand long when she saw antlers practically under her.  She could not see the body, she had to wait for the deer to work his way away from her.  He had snuck in beside her eating acorns from what was supposed to be beans, acorns that probably had dropped from the tree she was sitting in.  Canvas wraps the stand and drapes down 3/4 the way of the ladder to help with sneaking in and out of the stand, so she was unable to see the deer until he got far enough away.  I am guessing he was 50 yards away when she shot him, angling away.  She made a great shot, took the top of the heart.

Upon starting to look, I never saw any blood before seeing the white belly in the tall grass next to the brush pile.  He made it maybe 45 yards from where he was standing when she shot him.

As we found him.

Just shy of 18 inches inside the main beams.  Deer has almost identical browtines to the wide 8 I killed in 09.
