im your huckleberry
Well what does Winchester have up their sleeve. Kind of wonder what it's going to be.

elkoholic
Just what we need. Another hard kicking, barrel eating cartridge that requires the purchase of a new rifle that will kill no better than what is already in your gun cabinet. The short action (if it is a 6.5 WSM) might be an advantage over the 26 Nosler and 6.5-300 Weatherby but I doubt it will equal the Weatherby's velocity. What's up with this 6.5 fascination and long range shooting craze?

Correct on the high B.C. in the .264's AFAIK........... there was the .243 and .25 WSSM's and the .270, 7mm, .300 and .325 WSM's
Strut10
Oops. Forgot the .223 WSSM

im your huckleberry
The 6.5 wsm wouldn't surprise me, but wouldn't get any better than 264 win for velocity. Just guesstimating. The 7mm wsm is only about 100 fps slower than the Remington. That short action would make it lighter thought.

As soon as ANY new round comes out.........the wildcatter crew will neck it up and down to EVERY bore diameter imaginable. So, I'm sure the 6.5 WSM was done YEARS ago. A lot of modern SAAMI chamberings started life as wildcats. .220 Swift .22-.250 .25-06 6.5-.284 .30-.378 7mm STW The list is much, MUCH longer.................... wtnhunt
Imagine there is a target group that would go for a 6.5 short mag. Could fit it in an ar10 platform and achieve 3000+ fps with 140+ grain projectiles while taking advantage of the high bc .264 bullets. Would this end up a barrel burner though? im your huckleberry
Was reading and 6.5 wsm's wildcat name is the 6.5 leopard.
elkoholic
9 hours ago, wtnhunt said: Would this end up a barrel burner though? More than likely it would, as velocities 3000+ fps tend to burn out a barrel quickly if the rifle is fired very often. I had a brother-in-law who had a .264 and after only two years the barrel was done. That rifle, a Remington 700 ADL, kicked like a mule, but off the bench was a tack driver. 23 hours ago, wtnhunt said: As I understand it, has to do with the high bc bullet selections. Still doesn't explain the fascination with it. The average hunter can't hit squat at a 100 yards off-hand and if shooting with a good rest that might be pushed to 300 in a hunting situation. Then if you take into account the distance the average critter is shot at, the need for a 6.5 mm (actual 6.72) traveling at ~3000 fps makes no sense. I have not yet, but I am looking into trying to increase my target ranges. I know it is not popular with some, but I bit on the 6.5 creedmoor hype, and built one in an ar10 platform. Worked up some loads with hornady eld x bullets and getting very impressive accuracy. Hoping to try it at 300 yards, about the farthest distance I can stretch out to on my property. I like shooting, I really like shooting accurately from a gun I built with ammunition I handloaded. I have a 308 I built as well, will be fun comparing. Only downside is the reality that I may need to be conservative with my shooting since components have become near impossible to find. wtnhunt
So how close is this going to be to the 270 wsm?
elkoholic
Nothing to see here. The 6.8 Western (?) is a wsm case shortened to allow for a longer, heavier bullet (requiring a faster rate of twist) at less velocity. The question is, what is the true diameter? Is it .284 like the 7 mm wsm or a true 6.8 mm at .267? Why is the 6.5 Creedmoor not called a 6.7 Creedmoor? So many questions and the answers all come down to marketing which will get us to spend our hard earned dollars.
im your huckleberry
You said it David. If you want the actual conversation you have got to go to the Lazzeroni site. 6.5 mm is .255 inches what gives there. Shaun_300
Interesting! Curious to see if it's 6.5 or 6.8, isn't a 6.8 shooting .277 projectiles like the .270 WSM is though? Saw a Tikka T3 for sale that had been rebarreled for a 6.5x300WSM and thought it would be a pretty good shooter. Of all of the new ones recently I really like the look of that 6.5 PRC! And the .300 PRC. But hey, the oldies will do it just as well when you feed them the modern bullets that you're feeding the new ones. I opted for a .260 Remington in my Tikka mainly because of the creedmoor craze fan boys ranting and raving about it. I know it's a great cartridge! But holy...... some of these guys are just out of control! LOL! Another one on the way for me is another oldie, 700 Sendero in 7mm STW. I was all hot to trot on the 300 WSM when it first came out, now I find myself shooting the older stuff again.

Loaded to Layne Simpson's (the guy who invented it) data, it is one AWESOME round. 140 grainers at over 3600 fps !!!! Very few standard SAAMI rounds can hang with it at distance. The 6.5 Crapmore can't even hold the STW's jockstrap.
Shaun_300
Looks like it's designed for heavy stuff. The Xbolt in the new 6.8 has a 1 in 7.5" twist! Should work good! Thanks Don, really looking forward to playing with the STW. Always been intrigued by that big long 7mm cartridge. I'd like to try loading some 120gr ballistic tips for coyotes. Can you imagine?!?? 180 and 195gr Berger for long range showing off. Looking at the ballistics the STW even blows the doors off the .338 Lapua when it comes to bullet flight and speed.?
