No shooter bucks last year...........

But I did pull the trigger.

In 3 or 4 days of flintlock hunting I had 6 or 7 fat does DEAD TO RIGHTS..................if the gun (which ALWAYS goes boom) woulda gone off.  Apparently, somehow, my charge powder (fffG) must have drawn damp.  The pan would go.  But not the charge.  I was FLIPPIN' OUT !!!!!!!!!!!

And I'm sure the does just stood there watching you fiddle with the gun ?  I don't own a flint lock but I have had something similar happen to me with my cap lock.  I leaned it against a tree and the cap slid off.  When the does stopped in front of me, click, draw hammer, click, draw hammer, click, look down, start swearing.

  • 3 weeks later...

Well so far I have made three trips out with nothing to show for it.  Had a huge solo doe make her way in last Saturday but once she crossed the 30 yard line she winded me and did a Minion.  Hot weather this weekend, hard to get excited when the weather is summer like.

Haven't been out yet.  But I had no plans to be.   May take the flintlock for early muzzleloader because of my canning meat situation............   But about 3 weeks before I go do any serious tree time.  I did put a trail camera on a wide woods road intersection along my creek bottom.  First week there was not an antler in 300 pics.  Second week there were 3 of the most pitiful little bucks you could imagine.  We'll see what turns up this next pull (I'll grab the card tomorrow from all this past week).

Tuesday night, my cousin from Florida (he was up here hunting) shot his first ever deer.  Got a nice, symmetrical 14"-ish wide 8 pointer.  I was SO PUMPED to share that experience with him !!!

Well................  I'm a step or two closer to doing some hunting.   Shot the bow some.  Switched to my other (old) arrows because I just wasn't happy with the new ones last year.  Seems to have brought things back into a tolerance I can tolerate.

Then, this afternoon, I moved a stand that was only "just OK" last year.  Ended up putting it just about 100 yards down the bottom from another stand I've hunted for a good many years and took a really good deer from.  This bottom has been a total hotspot for calling.  And the placement of today's stand came from a bunch of years of watching which ONE PLACE the natural deer movement most often passes by.  At about 16 feet I'm not as high as I want to be.  But that's the best I could do for where I wanted t be, so................

I guess only putting in some tree time will tell.

Nice view!  I've haven't done as much bow hunting as in past this year.  Our early black powder opened Saturday it was a real soaker.  I went out Sunday and saw a couple does.  NYS is divided into two zones Northern and Southern.  Northern rifle season opens this Saturday and it looks like it will be a perfect day to hunt.  It will be cold and sunny.  Deer will be on their feet.  After that will be 3 weeks of bow season then Southern Tier rifle starts.  Lots of deer hunting to come.

Well I unleashed my turty-turty on my first Tug Hill buck.  At approximately 8:15 Saturday morning I heard the bluejays alert to something to my left.  I gripped my rifle and gave that area my focus.  About 5 minutes later this buck came trotting into view.  I saw that he was a decent sized buck so I sent one through the boiler room.

I'm not going to enter him just yet.  I usually do well during archery season and the rut has just begun.
