Shaun_300
Hey Everyone! turkeys have been introduced here in my part of Ontario for the past few years now. there is currently no season in the WMU that i hunt in, but i am sure there will be a season for turkeys soon there because of the growing population of turkeys in that area. i'll be interested in hunting them and i have a few questions for you turkey hunters. the main one is about my shotgun setup. i have a Remington 870 Wingmaster 12ga. it has a 26" barrel, and a full choke. it is only chambered for 2 3/4" shells though. would this be ok for taking birds if i use nitro magnum loads? what shot size should i use? i am totally new with all this, so don't mind all the questions also, its a regular gun, so would i need to get one that doesnt give a glare off of the barrel and stock? i know i will need a full atire of camo, which i have, except for a face mask, which i can get. thanks in advance for the help and advice
Rhino
Re: Thinking About Starting Turkey Hunting, a few ??\'s Sure your shotgun will do the job. I'm taking a youth hunter with me next weekend that will be using a 20 guage. You will need to pattern your shotgun to find what your maximum effecive range is. My guess would be about 35 yards or so but shoot some different loads and see which one delivers the tightest group for your shotgun. Shot size should be dependent on pattern density. I wouldn't worry too much about hunting with a blued barrel. I did for years before they came out with camo shotguns. If it makes you feel better there's camo tap available you can use on your barrel. You might want to check Ontario's regulations to see if they will allow you to go out and call tukeys with a camera for fun since your not allowed to hunt them yet. The best teachers for turkey hunting are the birds. You will get a lot of information here but you will learn a lot more by working turkeys. There's nothing like on the job training. VTbowman
Re: Thinking About Starting Turkey Hunting, a few ??\'s I use a Remington 870 pump and it works just fine. Its a plain-jane brown wood stock and black matt finsih on the metal parts. I had to buy a full choke and went with a TRU GLO I got from Walmart. I also wrapped mine with some old 3-D leafy scrap camo strips I had and it works great! Mine shoots 2 3/4" and 3", so I naturally use the 3" but I do not see why 2 3/4" would not do the trick. You will be limited on how far your patterns will hold but thats about it. You should still be able to get a good pattern out to 30 yards I would think... Like Rhino said, buy a few different sizes of shot, #4, #5, and #6's and see which one patterns the best. I hated to have to do this but was glad I did. Believe me shot size can make or break your patterns out ot even 30 yards... I was told to try a get at least 15 to 20 BB holes on the neck and head bones at 30 yards and your good to go. Other then that just remember a turkey has super-duper sight and ears to match. Not crap for a nose though... So try to cover all skin, especially hands, neck, and face. Good Luck!
