Maine Hntr
Well, here we go guys. Good luck this year! Hate to see so few people doing the Deer Contest but glad there's a few of us that come back every year for it!
hoosierhunter
Welcome friends! Things are good here in Indiana. Already shot a doe, but didn’t take pics to check in for the contest. She was a big girl, dressing at 132lbs. We will see what bucks start showing up to fill out my target list.

Congrats, season started here just this week, gonna head up to Maine next weekend for a two day bow hunt, will be back up there for a couple days in early November. Other than that I’ll spend most my time here in Mass with the Bow.
fly
Glad to be a part of the team! Shot my number three buck (the unicorn buck) on October 3rd. Quartering away shot at 50 yards with my crossbow. Didn't see the impact, but heard it. Waited a couple hours and then followed the blood trail 350 yards till it ran dry. The blood had gristle in it, no bubbles and just specs every 5-10 feet. I went back the following day and grid searched for several hours. Found no beds, and no deer. My best guess is it hit the front shoulder and went through the brisket area without hitting vitals. Hoping he survived and is still running around. Makes me sick of course. Pictured below is this buck I named the unicorn buck. I estimate him to be a 4.5 year old. The number one and two deer I named Victor and Rib Cage. Victor is a 5.5 year old that has a V on his right main beam (G2 and G3). I've been after him since 2020. Rib cage is a 170 inch 3.5 year old. Good luck to each of you! Maine Hntr
Dang Frank, sorry to hear. Definitely been there and had almost the same type of shot and result just a couple years ago on what would have been my biggest ever. Best thing to do is get back in stand, learn from it and hope for another or better opportunity. They’re strong animals, he’s probably out cruising somewhere! hoosierhunter
Dang Frank that sucks to lose one. Might get lucky and have him show back up. I’ve seen a few instances of wounded deer being harvested later on. I’ve even killed two big bucks that were previously wounded. One was 30 days later and the other was 2 weeks later. On another note, I did a hang & hunt on a new property and it was one of the best nights I’ve ever had. I never drew the bow but did see multiple 4.5+ bucks and passed one of them inside 10 steps. Amazing what weather can do when it gets right early in the year.
Ravin R10 man
Feel for ya Frank! Had that same thing happen 20 yrs ago on a real nice tall 8 pt. Arrow went right in behind shoulder qtr away shot. Tracked him next day, and he just led me around and around. landowner next door, shot him in rifle season a month later. Hunt long enough, and you will have odd things happen.
wtnhunt
That is a shame about that buck Frank. Hope he was not fatally hit and survives. If noone else signs up I may put myself on this team. I haven't sat in a stand yet this year, but am planning to go tomorrow morning with this cold front bringing temps down into the mid 30's. I passed on a 2.5 year old 9 last year, that we had loads of pictures of, and I think he made it through. Have not gotten pics of him this year. I did have a target buck, a solid 18 inch inside 10 point, but he has not been around since September 23rd. Body looks mature to me. He was on this edge 8 days apart, both times at around 7:30 am. Been seeing a lot of buzzards circling low over the property beside me, not too far from where I have this camera, the past few days though. Hoping they did not kill him. Rhino
Ditto...jump in William! No sense sitting on the sidelines. Sorry about the result of your close encounter Frank. I know you'll be watching your trail cams. My son winged a big 10 in Missouri 6 or 7 years ago. Called in Tracker John and his tracking dogs. If you haven't heard of Tracker John before he's a contributor to Drury's deer app. He's tracked many deer for the Drury team in the past too. He arrived the next day...after we made our 3rd pass he told me the buck was still alive. We looked for him on the cams in the same general area. He was right...showed up working a scrape less than a month later.
fly
Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I will let you all know if he shows up on camera. I have heard of tracker John, but have one neighbor that I have had legal issues with over property lines. We were headed to court a couple years ago when he died. (Wasn't me!). Anyway, I assume his family inherited the property and I have not heard anything about it since. At this point, I'm just leaving it as it is. I wouldn't want to ask permission to track on their property (if the dog went there) and get things stirred back up. I did shoot my Vengent after to make sure the scope was on and it was spot on. However, after the 4th shot the strap that pulls back the accuslide BROKE! Now it's at TenPoint getting a new strap! I love the speed that comes with these newer crossbows, but hate the associated problems. Anyway, my old TenPoint Stealth XLT is back in action until I get the new one back. Oh... and William, Good luck with that beautiful buck! Edited October 12, 2022 by fly
hoosierhunter
Haven’t been back in the tree yet, but hope to early next week.
Maine Hntr
Been out only a couple times here so far, saw a small 6 or 7 point at about 70 yards the other night. Decided not to go out Saturday, temps in the 70’s here, just not feeling that cool fall air yet. Looking forward to getting out a few times over the next couple weeks. hoosierhunter
I will be spending a few days in the tree this week. 🤞 that one of the boys does what I need them to do!
hoosierhunter
Had a great hunt last night and a shooter in the field, just didn’t have things go right to release an arrow. Back after him again tonight.
fly
Great looking buck Pat! I've been in the stand a few times since the unicorn buck and saw a couple does. They worked to within 45 yards, but i needed 5 more to feel comfortable with the shot. With my old Xbow 40 is my limit. I had a smaller buck walk right under me in a down pour at 15 yards. I love having close encounters. Then next week is full of kids sports, home projects, work related stuff, and a trip to Missouri with the wife to visit some wineries. After that I get serious. hoosierhunter
Speaking of wine, I’m finishing a bottle of Naked Chardonnay from Brys Estates in Traverse City Michigan. If you like whites, this place is amazing!

wtnhunt
Good luck Pat, that is a good buck. I have yet to sit in a stand this season. Guess I am going to hold out until the gun season. Hoping the buck i posted above is still around. Last pics I got of him were on Oct 11th. fly
I've been keeping a log of my hunts. So far 10 hunts in October (either a few hours in the AM or PM). Five of those hunts (50%) I have seen at least one deer. Four of the five I have had a shot opportunity (50 yards or closer). One of the ten (10%) included an encounter with a mature buck. This is all on my small parcel of 32.5 acres.

Had notebooks full of hunts, what stands weather cond. deer seen etc. One farm I rented , and I was the only one allowed to hunt on, got sold. so I kinda stopped doing that. I only hunt my home farm now. Nothing I can write down I dont already know. was interesting to see stats
hoosierhunter
Haven’t hunted the past few days as it warmed up. I ended up having to mow down my corn and plant winter wheat and rye today due to deer eating out the 2 acre plot already. Something I have used this year to analyze trail cams is deerlab. Pretty remarkable what you can learn. I already knew a lot but this is like steroids for analytics.
