c_lou
Re: Kids and video games...can\'t stand it I couldn't agree more. Some of the things that I hear parents say just blows my mind. We have friends that have a daughter and she swears up and down. I actually heard them say "When she goes to school it's the teachers job to get her to stop swearing." Parents just don't want to discipline there kids. What's wrong with a firm swat to the backside? I will admit that we let our daughter watch videos if we have stuff to do around the house ie. clean, laundry, etc... But it's usually something that gets her involved, Dora, Bear and the Big Blue House, or her new favorite Backyardigans. They are by far the best new cartoon on TV. It's 5 kids that pretend to go on different adventures. She loves to play along with them. That being said, from the moment I get home from work we are playing and horsing around. We go outside in the summer, play at the park, ride bikes, and just run around. Then before bed each night we read books for about a half an hour. My daughter is one of the best kids I know (not bias or anything). IT'S ALL ABOUT GETTING INVOLVED IN THIER LIVES!!!!!! wow that is a high soapbox, glad I'm off it. Guest Andrea
Re: Kids and video games...can\'t stand it Our boys have a PS2, but they are limited as to how long they can play. Homework is to be finished first, then they HAVE to play outside til dinner ( weather permitting) then they can play for maybe an hour. But they are also made to read every night. It's all in how you control it. I can't stand to have my kids sit around in their room all the time, glued to a t.v. I won't allow it. buckbuster11
Re: Kids and video games...can\'t stand it I still play my PS2 a bit. I love it and dont have a problem with it at all. If you are sitting in front of it all day everyday, that might become a problem. Other then that I just don't think its that big of a deal. Its no worse then the garbage the kids are watching on MTV and HBO.
RangerClay
Re: Kids and video games...can\'t stand it Hi everyone, my name is Ranger (You all reply "Hi Ranger") and I am a video game addict. It has been 12 hours since I played my last game. All joking aside it is the truth. Computer games are my one addiction and if I don't watch myself I will let it consume all my free time. Did I mention that I will be 40 years old in June? I disagree with the philosophy, no video games at all. My parents had that notion. When I went to a friends house and played for the first it was like crack cocaine. I was hooked and that kid became my best friend just because he had video games. This could possibly happen to your kids so be careful. Now I have two kids of my own and when they ask for a game system I will probably get one. However there will time restrictions as to when and how long they will use them. All games will have to pass my inspection. I remember when my Godson was 7 years old, his mother (who is divorced) gave him Grand Theft Auto. OH MY GOD! A game where you kill people and steal cars!!!!! I truely believe in the first ammendment but using it to sell this crap to kids is just plain wrong. Needless to say his father returned the game. In summary I would say allow the kids the use of the games but be a good parent and monitor what they watch. Plus find out what they are playing on-line. Check your computer cookies frequently. TreeStandBowHunter
Re: Kids and video games...can\'t stand it [ QUOTE ] how will your kids ever grow up to speak hubbllaa doooppaaa language? [/ QUOTE ] Exactly my point, thats all they do is the goo goo gaa gaa crap. Doesn't teach a kids nothing except how to talk ignorant. As a kid, I was never ignored. My father did great things with me and we still do when I go home. We went camping, hunting, threw football and everything else. But he never gave in to the Atari thing. All my friends had it except me. I used to get pissed. But today when I look back at it, I am thankful. The cartoons they show today on saturday mornings are JUNK. A lot of the shows they show on NICK are JUNK. Matter of fact, look at the PG movies today. 20 years ago they would of been rated R or at least PG-13. But I see little kids, and I am talking any kid under 10, they watch these PG movies and we wonder why more things happen today then they did 20 years ago. Todays PG movies are not for children to watch. JMO I am not knocking any parent in here. I am also sure in here, seeing that we are a hunting/family oriented group, that most of you enjoy the outdoors with your children as well, which is good. BTW, I watch all kinds of shows so don't think I am some hermit or something. But at the same time, I am 30 yrs old and I know right from wrong...most times anyway
Bob LeBlanc
Re: Kids and video games...can\'t stand it JimT, I'm not picking on you...really... I'm not... I'd like to know who paid for, or commissioned the study you reference, though. Like I said, my personal 'experiment' is completely contradictory to your statement...and you'll have a hard time finding a more dynamic, or reflex oriented sport than hockey. I don't think that these games 'cause' violence, but I do believe that they condition a person's acceptance of it. In cowboys and Indians, you'd shoot your buddy 2 or 3 times over an hour or so, and then move on to the next game, be it ball or Hide & Seek. Unless you inadvertently fell into a rock or a tree, there was no blood or guts spattered about. With some of these video games, you are transfixed to a CRT for hours on end, shooting people (and these days, people with very real faces) at every corner...and unquestionnably, you become desensitized to your environment and the act. I'll argue that point to the nay-sayer, forever! Yes...Video games are fun...on a rainy day. But Life's too short to spend it hitting 'reset'. When the 'day' is over, you can hit 'reset' all you want, and you'll eventually come to the realization that Life does not have a 'reset' button. ...And as for that "pre-Atari" comment...Are you calling me old?!?!? Hillbilly
Re: Kids and video games...can\'t stand it I have an XBOX and I'm 21 years old. With college and hunting and plain ole life, I have no time to play it very much. But I will admit during grade school and middle school I played video games a lot. I believe my parents bought my brother and me a video setup way to young. If parents are gonna buy video games and a set up like XBOX or Playstation2 I'd make sure they are about 12 or older. I believe when there are young children they should be out playing outside or playing with something else. I have a 5 year old cousin that got a XBOX can he tries and play sick so he can stay home. When he comes to our house he can only play it for 1 hour and thats it for the whole day. He doesn't sleep well when he plays that thing the whole day. And this kid has plenty of energy. I also believe that the violent games shouldn't be bought for 12 and under children. They should be mature enough play these kind of games, cause when they are young like this they might try and react the character and hurt someone else. Treestandbowhunter I did like this topic, I was thinking someone should bring this up. I wish now I never had a video game setup when I was a little guy. Cause I missed a lot of things with my dad. Now, that I'm older I try and spend time with him all the time.

[/ QUOTE ] What doesnt ?You can find violence anywhere, turn on the TV, get on the internet, pick up a news paper, violence is everywhere. If your gonna shield your kids from violence youd have to get rid of every form of entertainment in the house.I can push 3 buttons on this keyboard and be watching a video of a guy getting beheaded by terrorists if i want to.Your local news channels show nothing but violence 24/7.And this stuffs real, not a game.I think people tend to underestimate a kids ability to tell the difference sometimes. They know whats real and whats not, shooting at people on a games not a recipe for them to go out and blow someones head off, if they do it goes a lot deeper then the games they were playing IMO
