HeviShot
AMEN BROTHER! PREACH ON! My first shell is a Hevishot#6.My backup is a Win Supreme #4LEAD! I can't any difference in these 2 and my gun except for the recoil and the size of the holes.
Guest DaHunter
Re: hevi shot vs lead Dont know yet...my box of nitro hevi-shot is on the way tho! 4x5x7 hevi-shot...2.5oz and 2.25oz. I'll let ya know the difference.
maytom
Re: hevi shot vs lead I'd say that Hevishot hits a "LOT" harder than a comparable sized lead pellet!! Better patterns as well. I made the switch.
Fullfan
Re: hevi shot vs lead I am with maytom, even when I am shooting at the 3/4 plywood I can hear the Hevi-Shot hit harder. Maytom I got a box of 3 1/2 Federal Heviweight flight control in #5. This stuff ripps!!! the wad was within 2 or 3 feet of the target at 40yds. I am making the change from hevi to the new federals. (it was shot out of a x-2)
snapper
Re: hevi shot vs lead The Rem. heavy shot shoots very well out of my gun. Haven't found anything that patterns better "yet". I've tried many chokes, shells, distances and still come back to Rem. #5 3 1/2" heavy shot. I too see the difference when shooting a piece of 3/4" OSB at 40 yards...the heavy shot rock the board harder than anything else. With all that said, I have a box of Fed. #6 3 1/2" flight control here that I have yet to try!!!!!!!!
huntn4bucks
Re: hevi shot vs lead I made the switch from Rem Hevi-shot to Fed FliteControl Lead. Based on my setup, Fed FliteControl Lead & Fed FliteControl HeavyWeight both performed very similar, however, both outperformed Rem Hevi-shot. Again...this is with my setup. I chose to go with the Fed FliteControl Copper plated lead because it is much cheaper than the HeavyWeight but performed about the same. I've already knocked over one gobbler with the new shells and it performed like a champ!
KYLimbHanger
Re: hevi shot vs lead Seems the Hevi Shot debates are forever. But, I think we all realize, (both lead and Hevi shooters) the new Federals with Flight Control are great turkey loads.
maytom
Re: hevi shot vs lead I agree. They sure are comming out with a bunch of new turkey loads this year and from many different companies as well. Biggest thing is to find what shoots good in your gun. Personal favorites play heavy on this topic.
Leo
Re: hevi shot vs lead Personally I have stoned ducks with #4 Hevi's since they are non-toxic they are the best thing ever for waterfowlers. For me the jury is still out on Hevis for Turkeys. My personal gun patterns Winchester XXs #4 very very well. I have done the math and the Hevi #5s don't offer enough of a pellet number advantage or downrange punch to entice me to change. #4 loads have less pellets than the equivalent Lead load which is another strike against them. The patterns would simply have to be alot better. That being said there is such a thing as too tight a pattern too close.

maytom
Re: hevi shot vs lead Sorry to differ rossburg, but a #7 hevishot pellet hits almost as hard as a #5 lead pellet, and how many more #7 pellets can you put into a shell VS #5's? Tell me where the "Wash" comes from? By the way, I don't claim to be a "know-it-all" either, but I have been patterning my turkey gun with many different loads and chokes over the years, so I guess my first hand results entitle me to give an honest opinion or two of what works. I'm not knocking you here, but in my opinion, Hevishot will eventually make lead & Steel shot obsolete, just because it works so much better. Leo
Re: hevi shot vs lead Accepted Let's put some math to it just for grins and compare #4s from a 3in 12 ga. 1 ounce of Lead #4s is 135 pellets 1 ounce of Hevi #4s is 126 pellets (10% heavier means 10% less pellets per ounce) Standard lead turkey load has a payload of 2 oz which equals 270 pellets. Standard hevi shot turkey load has a payload of 1 5/8oz which equals only 205 pellets. Now let's say for example your personal shotgun patterns lead a pathetic 70% (it can be better I know but this is to illustrate the point) That means 0.7X270=189 pellets are inside the pattern circle. Now if as advertised you get the impressive 90% pattern with Hevi Shot then 0.9X205=185 pellets. Hmmm, looks like a wash to me Granted the Hevi Shot hits harder because it's faster and heavier. So theoretically range is increased by virtue of using it. But remember the pattern is still spreading. So there is more to this story than just figuring out how much comparative Momentum and Kinetic energy the hevi shot pellets have. IE. you still need to hit your target
Guest DaHunter
Re: hevi shot vs lead well i deffinitly cant wait for my nitro shells too come in!! They say i am supposed too get 290-330 pellets in a 10 inch circle at 40 yards. I can garentee i havent seen that many in any lead patterns too date. Also i would shoot number 6 lead about 35 yards maybe 40 tops.
snapper
Re: hevi shot vs lead Shooting 3 1/2" shells out of my 870...and several different chokes...I've tried several different brand of shells also...haven't found a copperplated lead shell that patterns as well as the Rem. heavy shots out of my gun! All guns/chokes are different, we all want the best shooting pattern, we owe that much to the game we are hunting. If something doesn't work for you...it doesn't mean its hype. Just because you don't like a product or get the results you thought you should...doesn't mean its no good. If you have something to add to this, based on your experience...feel free. If your not buying into the "hype", then don't and move on.

Guest ketchum
Re: hevi shot vs lead I don't know how hard any of them hit, although I've shot hundreds of 3.5's. Nothing I mean nothing no lead ever made that I can find, will shoot as good as Nitro 4x5x7 hevi-shot. Threre's no wash when at 60yards the hevi is ripping the paper up and the lead hardly even hits the paper!!!
Guest DaHunter
Re: hevi shot vs lead As you can see most of us are talking about nitro...i think the rem hevi shot works but not nearly as well. Still waitin on my order expecting them in today!
snapper
Re: hevi shot vs lead First, I wasn't telling you to "shut up"...sorry if thats the way you took it. I said "I" was moving on...if you (with 7 reply's to your own thread) want to keep beating the "dead horse"...go ahead. Lastly...just because the Rem hevi shot doesn't work for you, doesn't mean its junk. I've had good results with it and haven't found a "lead" or "copper plated" shell that works as well for my gun, see this post . I got more bb's in the 9" plate and 3" circle than any other combo (which this wasn't my first test), I've tested many. This test was just comparing the Rem. hevi shot to Federal Flight control. I will gladly pay the $1 more per shell with the results I got...reguardless of what "hits" harder or flys "faster". [ QUOTE ] THE INDIVIDUAL PELLET MAY BE BETTER THAN LEAD, BUT THEY DON'T PUT NEAR AS MANY IN A SHELL. SO, YOU'VE REALLY GAINED NO ADVANTAGE... [/ QUOTE ] If there is less bb's in the shell...then it really out performed the lead...and I gained a heck of an advantage. With that all said... "I'm moving on!!" 13littleones
Re: hevi shot vs lead I have missed a couple of birds with lead shot....I'm 4 for 4 with Hevi-Shot...... In 2000, HEVI·SHOT product managed to blow away the competition and beat the existing world record by placing an impressive 42 pellets inside a three-inch circle at 40 yards. Again in 2001, HEVI·SHOT loads out-classed the competition by taking top honors in all five major categories of the NWTF competition. Now, in 2002, Remington Premier HEVI·SHOT Magnum Turkey Loads dominated the Still Target Competitions by winning four of the five categories. Remington Premier HEVI·SHOT Magnum Turkey Loads were used to take the 20 gauge Jakes division, the 20 gauge Women’s division, the 20 gauge Men’s Open division and 12 gauge Hunter class competitions.
