kooter
i had just a regular 700 bdl in 300 rum, would knock the crud out of my shoulder and the deer. put a muzzle break on it to tame it a little. I got rid of it because the price of shells were a little steep for me. My gun shot really good though, would shoot 1" groups at 200 yards. AJ
Re: 300 Unless you have the ability and location to shoot deer at distances over 400 yards, its a waste of powder. Its an overbore cartridge. This means the powder capacity is too large for the bore diameter. I would not think of using one with less than a 200 gr bullet. It's big brothers on the other hand are a different story. Take a 338 RUM or 375 RUM and thats when the case capacity comes into play. tedicast
Re: 300 [ QUOTE ] not plannin on taking it to the range to shoot targets with it too much more than nessesary. [/ QUOTE ] In my opinion that right there says it all. You should be totally familiar and comfortable shooting any gun you will be hunting with. Putting 10 round through a gun to sight it in, is not becoming familiar with your gun. I think you would be much better off with a caliber that your are comfortable shooting more often. You owe it to the game you hunt, to be familiar with your weapon of choice.
AJ
Re: 300 Good point John! I see the 300 RUM as a great gun the second time around. The shooter should burn up the barrel getting to know what the gun can do with the first one, and when it gets rebarreled they will have the knowledge to use it to its potential. Shoot the first gun a lot. Other than sighting it in at 100 yards, I would not shoot it under 300 yards. Learn at long range on paper, and then when its rebuilt by a good gunsmith, it will be an asset to the shooters skill, not just their ego.
