johnf
My nephew wants to follow in my footsteps and get an NEF single shot but can't decide on the caliber. He's 16, nearly 6' and weighs about 190lbs so recoil is not much of an issue. He is only 16 and will have to buy his own ammo, so cost is an issue. He really likes my 243 because of the low recoil, but I've been trying to talk him into something bigger. He's been thinking and here's what we've narrowed it down to. 243, 25-06, 270, 7mm-08. Ok lets have it.
Guest J_Owens_66
Re: Which caliber? Out of those the .270 is the most versitile i would think. But the 7mm-08 has the larger bullets incase of a big game hunt (elk, moose). The .243 doubles as a varmint/deer gun, as does the 25-06. Any would be great guns for deer, i would leave it to the 7mm-08 and the .270 for larger game than that though.

AJ
Re: Which caliber? I would suggest he gets a 223 now. He will have all summer to shoot the gun to learn the trigger and fit of the gun. Its hard to beat the price of 223 ammo. For deer hunting, you can send the receiver and forend in and get a .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, or whatever barrel. It can be a gift, he can save the money to get a barrel, etc. Its hard to beat their Barrel Accessory Program.

But he said money was tight so I didn't. AJ read my mind...Or I read his or something.
johnf
Re: Which caliber? How would the recoil on the 308 compare with the 270 or 7mm 08?
too_pointer
Re: Which caliber? With his build he certainly can handle more than a .243. The larger caliburs will allow him to use it on many different animals he might hunt. I guess he needs to decide if this gun will be short term and only for deer, or he might use it later on others. too_pointer

[/ QUOTE ] It will be a good bit less than a .270 and almost the same as a 7mm-08, as they both are based on the same cartridge.
