Squirrelhunter91
Is a .308 to much gun for coyotes? I would like to save the furs. What about fox and bobcat and other varmints like woodchucks?
JimT
Re: .308 for coyotes and varmint? It is a little big, but will work. Just use a good hard bullet maybe?

Reloader
Re: .308 for coyotes and varmint? I haven't hunted coyote wit a .308 but i use a 30-06 for varmint hunting using the Hornady V-Max 110 grain bullet with a 5% below max load of Aliant 2400 powder. In my Ruger M77 UL it is acurate out to 300 yards (posibly more but that's as far as I've tested) and fragments fast. It would stop a coyote dead in its tracks. I like it for that reason...whatever you hit whon't don't run much , but then again I also never save furs, just shooting pests here. WaCoyote
Re: .308 for coyotes and varmint? [ QUOTE ] fox and bobcat [/ QUOTE ] No friggin way!! A Bobcat would vaporize. Unless thats what you want. If a 308 is all you've got use fmj's and keep your fingers crossed. Never popped a fox so can't tell you about them but given the size of them I assume the results would be the same. Don't have tons of experience on Bobcats but they only go 20 lbs soaking wet on the average. I'd bet a 308 would splatter them. See the 30-06 for coyotes post and read the response I put up. >308 and 30-06 are the same except for a couple hundred fps.
Squirrelhunter91
Re: .308 for coyotes and varmint? Not the bobcats and foxes in our area. Our bobcats are hitting 50-60 lbs and our foxes 30 lbs. No one predator hunts up there. No one wants to shoot anything that won't bring them meat. But I'm sure if it is a slow day on the deer stand and someone see's yotes wandering by, by all means go for it. My dad's friend wounded two with his 25-06 on opening day of deer season last November..
Squirrelhunter91
Re: .308 for coyotes and varmint? Yeah. Very sure. I have seen them. But like I said, no one will shoot anything that won't bring them meat. But if its a slow day or opening morning, and if one wanders by.... nuff said. NO ONE PREDATOR HUNTS AROUND HERE
Guest gfourhunter
Re: .308 for coyotes and varmint? heck with the over kill on the varmet guns. i like to use a 223 or a 243. sometimes i will take my .17 rem or my 22-250. heck with using all them 30 calleber guns. use them on bigger game. some days i even use a over and under 22 mag 20. gauge. loading the 20 gauge with 00buck. [/ QUOTE ] All depends on the load...I've seen my .22-250 do more damage on a ground hog than a .300 winmag. I shot a coyote with a .300 winmag and surely didn't "vaporize", put a pretty big hole in it...but still did the job. I also agree, 50lb bobcat seems a little extreme. Heck even a 30lb fox...is big. WaCoyote
Re: .308 for coyotes and varmint? As for saving the pelt, bobbys are small, a 308 would most definately exit and thats where the damage happens. I would say use solids if legal. Thats what I would try if I had to but since I don't I'm stickin w/ the 250. The bobcat In my picture gallery was hit with no exit hole at all w/ the 250. But I would think a broadside may have exited. It was a chest hit. I havent seen a fox since my army days and I dont remember them looking anywhere as big as a coyote. I could be wrong though 20 years time messes w/ the memory a bit. They sure are purdy though. I for one am glad Bobcats don't weigh 50-60 pounds. That'd be a touch scary.
