spyderpancake
Re: pump, lever, bolt [ QUOTE ] I'd say 100 yards shooting at a penny. 3 shots each...most holes in the penny wins! [/ QUOTE ] I know yall are joking, but we ought to do some sort of match. We do a postal match on snipershide.com and it is a lot of fun. No prize, just pride If yall are willing, I might could try to set something up...
snapper
Re: pump, lever, bolt [ QUOTE ] I know yall are joking, but we ought to do some sort of match [/ QUOTE ] I wasn't joking...I've shot penny's before and me and Ironbuck met for lunch before. Would be fun to get together and shoot. Would be tough for folks not living close though. I think this post got alittle off track...I believe it was intended on which action do you prefer to use. I prefer bolts, but levers are fun to shoot. I don't own any pump rifles...only shotguns. As far as accuracy, I may be wrong, but in my opinion, straight from the box (factory gun) a bolt action would be hard to beat. I threw the "factory gun" part in for AJ! Shaun_300
Re: pump, lever, bolt i'm a lever man myself, with a bolt next in line. i like the lever because it offers a quick second shot if needed, they are lighter for lugging around the bush, and they are a lot easier to unload and load vs a bolt with the dang floorplate. as for varmint hunting, defiently bolt action. but for deer hunting, i'll stick with the Browning BLR .300 WSM

I have a couple of quarters I shot at 50 yards with the quarter turned lengthways, it is pretty cool. The whole idea behind a postal match is so that people like us who live far apart can have some sort of competition. Targets are mailed in to a judge. Like I said, if we have enough people respond than I will try to set something up...

AJ
Re: pump, lever, bolt Yep, its all about the honor system. If someone is so untrustworthy that they have to cheat to win a bragging rights contest, they have enough problems. I have done a couple of them in the past on other boards. All participants used a standard target and shot from 100 yards. There were classes you could compete in like: Rimfire factory gun under .25 caliber modified gun under .25 caliber factory gun .25 through .30 caliber modified gun .25 through .30 caliber Factory big bore modified big bore We did require that all participants shot 5 different 5 shot groups on a single target. The target has 6 bulls on it 5 of them for record and one for sighters. All targets need to be mailed to one person for scoring. I have thought about doing one of these but I don't have the time for all of the logistics.
iron buck
Re: pump, lever, bolt That does sound like fun. MAybe we could put something like this together just for fun here on the forums? Working off a standard target that was posted & we could print it out on 8.5 by 11" paper. Snapper, Your penny shoot idea sounds like fun also. For fun I'd do this with my 7600. I'll work up a load & sight it dead on at 100. I'll even keep my trusty old 2-7x Redfield on it If I were real serious about trying to win I'd use my 700 VLS 22-250. But I like the idea of slide action taking on the bolt world If you want to set a gathering up for this spring I'd be game. And we could have lunch at that same place, that was great! JimT
Re: pump, lever, bolt I would be up for this. I may just have to break out my 30-06 for it though. It is my most accurate centerfire.
snapper
Re: pump, lever, bolt Wait a min....now your talking about leaving the "pump" gun home and using a bolt? I thought you'd put it up against any bolt?
hangunnr
Re: pump, lever, bolt Hey Snapper and ironbuck, See if you can plan a little shootin match for the second week in May. I should be in that area sometime around the 8th to the 14th. It might be nice to lay a little Hoosier smackdown on you two pennslytucky boys....... hangunnr
iron buck
Re: pump, lever, bolt No snap........I'll use my Remington 7600 in 35 Whelen. What rifle will you be using? It should be a deer caliber to keep things even HAndgunner, That time fram would work for me. Now all we need to do is to decide where. If we did it near Pittsburgh we could use my club range. Unless Snapper has a handy range out in Indiana
too_pointer
Re: pump, lever, bolt The lever action is the only one that I have never owned. I shot shot many though, and yes, they are fun. We all have our "pet" guns we like. I'm a lefty, and gun for lefties just weren't around that much when I started hunting, so I really didn't use bolts that much. I'm sure that bolts are probably the most reliable, I just grew up using pumps and semi's with great luck with them. too_pointer
longislandhunter
Re: pump, lever, bolt My 2 deer rifles are both bolt actions. One is a .243 and the other a 30.06 I am a firm believer that you can't beat a good bolt action for accuracy.

I don't know how it got to be an accuracy post...but you've said you'd put that pump up against "any" bolt, now you want to make rules? The only fair way...would be a completely stock gun shooting factory ammo.

I'd say this became an accuracy thing when you talked about a penny shoot . Like I said, my trustly 7600 & I are up for this challenge . The reason I said keep it a deer caliber is to keep it apples to apples. I only have (1) 7600 & it is in 35 whelen. That is what I will use. Bring what you want....but a deer caliber keeps thigs more even. But if you Must use a varmint caliber caliber bolt action because you are feeling the pressure to beat the mighty whelen be my guest
PAhardwoods
Re: pump, lever, bolt my 270 and main deer gun is a bolt action so i hunt with it 90 percent of the time but i do enjoy taking my marlin lever 30-30 out when sneaking around hemlocks in the 2nd week of season. as for my experince around the pump guns. my gramps has the 760 30-06 and he can drive tacks with it and his follow up shots when he needs them its like he's shooting a semi.....he's had this gun since the 50's its killed more deer then i've seen and he still hunts with it every deer season I was lucky enough to take a deer with this gun a couple years ago and loved it. JimT
Re: pump, lever, bolt [ QUOTE ] Don't like the pump. Seems hard to cycle and keep on target quickly. [/ QUOTE ] Can you stay on target better with a bolt? If so, your not in the norm. lol.
iron buck
Re: pump, lever, bolt [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Don't like the pump. Seems hard to cycle and keep on target quickly. [/ QUOTE ] Can you stay on target better with a bolt? If so, your not in the norm. lol. [/ QUOTE ] I second that. The action of recoil cycles the pump action back automatically. Snapping your hand forward to send the new round home brings you naturally back on target. A much more natural process to get the target back into the sight picture. The late Finn Agard, whom I considedred one of the greatest firearm/hunting columnists did tests on action types & accurate follow up shots. The slide action came out on tops. Ahead of the lever action & even semi auto. These actions were followed up by the bolt action & single shot. Bolt actions are no way as fast on follow up as a slide action. Now someones comfort with one action over the next may come into play. But when familar with both action types, the slide action will get of a faster, aimed, second shot every time. [/ QUOTE ] Having hunted all my life with a Remington 870 pump, using a pump action centerfire is second nature, You definately stay in your shooting form better working the action on a a pump gun, then a bolt. Most times after firing at game, I pump the gun without even realizing I worked the action. It is second nature now.
