johnf
For short range it's a great rifle. If you don't shoot passed 100 yards you'll never need another gun. I have a 30-30 that was handed down to me from my grandfather, it's the least valuble rifle that I have, but I wouldn't take a million dollars for it. Guest Colorado Bob
Re: 30-30 deadeye-----I just typed a response in the hunting equipment for you. the 30-30 is a good close range whitetail rifle. It limits your shots out to @ 150 yards IMO. If I were you I would save my money & look at a good bolt action rifle like a Ruger, Tikka , Rem , Win or Savage in either 270 or 30/06. Then top it with a Leupold VX II in 3x9. Then you are set for everyhthing you will ever hunt except for the Big Bears in AK. But if you can afford a Grizzly hunt----you can afford a 338 Mag. For now-- I would use the 30-30 Marlin & the scope it has on it. I'm assuming you are young-----high schooler ? If so---get a summer job---save those paychecks & get a 30/06 Ruger & a 3x9 Leupold. Things mean more when you earn & save those dollars !! Just wanted to add that's what I did 35 years ago. I got a Remington Model 700 in 30/06 when I was 15. The next summer I got a Leupold scope. I cut grass & worked as a grill boy at the local DQ. I still use that rifle & scope for every hunt I go on. Good Luck--CB
AJ
Re: 30-30 Like others have said, its a functional short range gun. I like it in handguns, particularly when its blown out as Ackley Improved style. Since it mainly comes in lever guns (not always, but most popular) I have no use for it. I am not a lever gun fan, other than the Savage 99. If you get $50/week, you will be saving a long long time for a quad.
Norm Sauceman
Re: 30-30 I am a huge fan of the 30-30 for brushy areas. I really like the Marlin 336's.

I would feel comfortable out to 100 yards, not much further. [/ QUOTE ] When I started hunting as a 10 year old 8 years ago, I used a Marlin .30-30. I have taken at least 15 deer with it. Near the end, before I moved up to a bolt-gun, I took several deer between 100-175 yards. You would be suprised what a .30-30 with decent glass can do. Try shooting one off a bag at 150-200 yards. Plenty of deer-killing accuracy.
too_pointer
Re: 30-30 Hey, I believe you guys. You have alot more experience than I do at those ranges. I have killed deer with it many times, not just at those longer ranges. It sounds like it is much better than I thought too_pointer

Strut_Buster
Re: 30-30 The first deer i ever saw get taken was with a winchester 94 30-30 open sights at 125 yards with my grandpa. That gun is aincient but still shoots 150 yards with open sights no problem.
BLH
Re: 30-30 I have hunted for close to 14 years and used a 30-30 for 7 years to kill over half of my deer. Nice gun out to 150 yards (as everyone else has pointed out), but with some scouting, any deer can be killed at ranges closer to 150 yards. JimT
Re: 30-30 I prefer to bowhunt also. To some though shooting them from a long distance is the thrill. Nothi8ng wrong with that either as long as the hunter knows his abilites. I would like to get a bolt action 30-30 some day to hunt with. My buddy had a Savage that shot awsome. Does anyone still chamber a bolt in 30-30?
Modillo
Re: 30-30 i agree. with the right amount of practice any one could shoot out to about 250 -300yds with a 30-30. it will take patiance, but can be done. the 30-30 is a very good rifle for evan elk. ill be getting a 30-30 from me gramps the well over 100 years old. it is in perfect fireing condidtion.and its all origional.it does not say winchester 30-30 but something like wcp 30. or something like that.
