6mm Rem.

I'm hoping someone out there can answer this question for me. Could a person have a rifle that is chambered in 243 Win. rechambered to 6mm Rem. without rebarreling it. I'm not sure if it would work, because the 6mm case has more taper than the 243, but the 6mm is also slightly longer. I just got a really good deal on a ton of reloading stuff, and included was over 800 new 6mm rem brass, along with 2500, 243 bullets in all grain sizes. I don't own a 6mm, but thought that if it was possible to convert a 243 to 6mm I'd buy an H&R 243 ultra with the bull barrel and get a gunsmith to send a 6mm reamer into it, then I could use all that brass.

Re: 6mm Rem.

You can't have a .243 Win rechambered into 6mm remington on the Handi Rifle. The barrel needs to be set back a turn to recut the shoulder. since hte Handi Rifle has the lug at the breech, its not feesable.

However, you can rechamber the barrel to 6mm Rem Ackley Improved. That is a sweet cartridge. I have a custom Savage 110 in 6mm AI and its a winner. You will need different dies, but you can use the same bullets, brass, etc. You can sell the 243 dies (if you have them) and get new 6mm AI dies. This site has a lot of 6mm AI data.

I would definately get the 24" barrel.

Re: 6mm Rem.

Thanks AJ, the 6mm Rem AI looks like a great cartidge. I'll have to see which way I go with all this brass. I could just sell it and use all the bullets in my .243 Win that I already have, or another option is just to buy a commercial 6mm Rem. I see that Remington chambers their VLS in 6mm Rem., a 26" varmint weight barrel, could be interesting.

A while back I had started a thread asking about chamberings for an ultra light rifle, do you think the 6mm Rem AI would be a good idea in that type of gun??

Re: 6mm Rem.

Not particularly, I like the cartridge a lot but it is best with a barrel that is longer than 24" to take advantage of the slow burning powder. I prefer 26" for that cartridge. The 6mm Rem AI should be compared to a 7mm Rem Mag as the capacity to bore is similar. I would not want a 7mm Mag with a 22" barrel.

If you step up in bore diameter the same cartridge is ok. Like I mentioned last time, the .257 Roberts AI is a great catridge. Its basically the same cartridge necked up to .25 caliber.
