Guest ronin
Yesterday was a good day. 70 degrees, lots of birds, and I was hunting with my son. Can't ask for much more. We called in about 7 birds throughout the day and here is the one my son bagged at 1030 AM. This bruiser came in with a buddy and they hung up about 60 yards out. I had to sneak backwards about 40-50 yards and call to coax them in. Shayne driopped this guy at 35 yards with a Winchester 1300 NWTF 3" with #4 HevyShot. Hopefully I can add mine to the Long Beard's Ghost Team before too long! [image] [/image]
Guest ronin
Re: California Opener Oh yeah, he was 20 Lb's with a 27" tail fan and a 7" beard. To give you an idea of size, my son is a 270 lb former football player. The beard was thick but had beard rot last year it looks like. Interestingly, he had no spurs...not even nubs! However, he was fully mature and about 3 years old. Weird.
Rhino
Re: California Opener Congrats to your son. A friend of mine killed a gobbler with no spurs once before too. That's a pretty rare thing to happen.

borch
Re: California Opener Very nice bird. You hear of toms without spurs or just one spur fairly often. About the same as a bearded hen. Maybe a little less common. Borch
Guest ronin
Re: California Opener Thanks everyone. I'm going out with my bow tomorrow. Borch, I have never seen a tom without spurs. My son bagged another one in the same general area today but probably a year younger. No spurs on it, either. Not even nubs. Do you suppose they are from the same brood stock? redbeard
Re: California Opener Awesome, good for your son. Neat about the no spurs, I've seen that once, but that's the first time I ever heard of measuring the tail fan. I count my tail feathers to see if they have more than 17 or 18 but never the length. Guest ronin
Re: California Opener I just measured it because it was wider than most I've shot. I counted the feathers and there are 20. Thanks everyone.
