You got it right when ya said its not a fair comaprison, the winchester AA shells are there highline target shells, not the el-cheapo's. As for how dirty a certain load is depends mostly on what kind of powder they are using, slow burning powders more grime while faster burns will also generaly be cleaner. I'm not shure what powders federal uses in bottom barrel shells.

just what shells where you using......actually name??

I think the top line federal target shells are the Gold Medels, and I have very little experiace with them, though i do some re-loading in those hulls.

You didnt have the seal sctivator in when shooting the 3 1/2's did ya?? that could be the problem. Velocity is the key for getting guns to cycle, the slower burning powders are used more in magnum loads...hence the reason they will cycle the gun better, the faster cleaner burning loads are more of a target type powder(this is by no means set in stone) hence the cleaner burning yet non cycleing of the gun. If the spring cont. to be a pain look at a sure-cycle system expensive but they work like a charm.

A good example I tested the 935 which says it wont cycle 2 3/4 shells but i found that winchester super speed loads would cycle just fine...even though they only have an ounce of shot in them.

Same gun wouldnt cycle fiochii golden pheasent loads with 1 3/8 ounces of shot and max drams. not only does speed kill but it also cycles.

Actually, this is not totally true. The speed has nothing to do with the gun cycling. Its the higher pressure level. When you crank up the LUP (lead units of pressure) numbers, the guns will cycle fine.

Ya gotta break that puppy in. Put a flat or two through it and it will be a different critter. I guess you will have to use AA or even better are the Premier STS. They are about the same price as the AA loads. The Gun Club Target Loads are ok and should cycle your gun. Take a run down to G.M. in Hooterville and stock up.

Actually, this is not totally true. The speed has nothing to do with the gun cycling. Its the higher pressure level. When you crank up the LUP (lead units of pressure) numbers, the guns will cycle fine.

my comment was made based on my experiance with mossberg,remingtons and benelli's. From what I have Learned through time in the field is the powder load has far more to do with them cycleing that the shot load does.

I've talked to several owners of 935's and most have said the same thing. One guy in particular has no problem getting 7/8oz of BB's to cycle his 935, the load is moving at 1600fps at sea level.

You can have two loads going the same velocity with teh same payload and have vastly different pressures. I can create some loads that will not cycle my semi auto gun reliably but they are going the standard 1145 or 1200 fps. They are developing a lot less pressure than a load with faster powder that has a higher pressure level but the same velocity.

When you get into mangum anything they are going to cycle. These loads are cranking out in excess of 11,000 LUP. Hodgdon lists target loads that vary from 5,200 LUP to 8,800 LUP all for the same payload going the same speed. Typically you need at least 7,000 LUP to cycle a semi. When you get into the 3.5" semis it takes a higher level yet to reliably cycle the action. I like to keep them over 9,000 LUP for adequate cycling.

Thanks AJ, I new what LUP was just never really given it too much thought when it comes to cycleing..use it more for figureing pressures for my old doubles.....the differance is in the powder than? I.E. faster burning vs slower burning powders?

Yep, actually the whole combination of primer, powder amount and speed, and wad, will determine what the pressure will be for a given payload's velocity.
