Jeramie
We rarely get battered with snow and such but this past winter was VERY mild, even for Oklahoma. I can hardly wait to see what adverse effect it will have on us. Ive had one misserable turkey season in the past and I am affraid im in for another. We are already finding ticks and I can only imagine what the skeeters and ticks will be like with about a month of 70deg temps. Its high time to start eliminating standing water (old buckets and such) around the house. I sure wish we could have seen a couple of harsh weeks to help relinquish these pest but we are already in the 70's and the grass is green... I think winter is done for and spring is about to become a burden in one way or another.
WHISKEYSWAMP
Re: Mild Winter.... Now for the insects. A combination of permanone for ticks and a Thermacell for skeetes will definitely help. I was down in the tick and skeeter infested swamps of Florida last week... never found a tick on me and only had a few skeeter bites. popgun
Re: Mild Winter.... Now for the insects. I also know what you mean jeramie, but I don't think the harshness of the winter has much to do with spring insects. I have no scientific data to prove this theory, but if cold winters had anything to do with the insect population, why would there be such a hoard of mosquito's in Alaska? I understand that sometimes the elk and caribou actually stampede from the bites of the troublesome insects. I think it has more to do with the total moisture during the winter and early spring, whether it be from snow melt, or just rain. It could also have something to do with an early warming in the spring. Actually, I think it is somehow caused by the vegetarians and anti-hunters. (But I can't prove it yet) This is just my theory. .....popgun
DSGB
Re: Mild Winter.... Now for the insects. Skeeters were out Saturday before the rain started. It's gonna be worse in a few weeks once the weather warms up.
JimT
Re: Mild Winter.... Now for the insects. Thats right...They could be a real problem huh. We still have feet of snow on the ground here in places. that should help them here a little. Hope you don't get chewed to bad.
Tominator
Re: Mild Winter.... Now for the insects. I just wish Ohio would dry out a bit. We're way above normal for precipitation.

I hate those dang skeeters in the turkey woods as much as anyone, but I'd take sun, warmth, and bugs over the pukey, rainy, snowy, cold stuff we've had here for the last 5 months. dogdoc
Re: Mild Winter.... Now for the insects. yep---pulled a tick off of me last weekend after doing a little shed hunting. Guest WILD_BILL
Re: Mild Winter.... Now for the insects. Up here In the great NW, we had a very mild winter. In fact our snow totals weren't very good. The bugs are already out. This might be the year we get two hatches of bugs. I dread wacoyote and I will be covered w/ "TICKS" this turkey season.
