Federal Flight Control Wad stuck in 2x4 @ 40 yards

I shoot the Federal FC's and I love them. My hunting partner also shoots them. When he patterned his gun the other day with the Federal FC's, he was amazed. He laid a large piece of cardboard against a carpenters horse. The Federal Flight Control wad went through the cardboard and stuck into the 2x4 stud of the horse at 40 yards. Honestly. He told me about this but I couldn't believe it. I went down to shoot and sure enough, there it was. It wouldn't come out, it is wedged in the 2x4. He was shooting a Federal FC 3.5in. 2 1/4 oz. #6 with a Remington SPS-T Thumbhole and a Kicks Gobbling Thunder .655. I will post a pic when I get a chance. Truley remarkable.

Re: Federal Flight Control Wad stuck in 2x4 @ 40 yards

I shoot a Comp-N-Choke .655 with Federal Flight Controls. But, they are tricky with this combo. Sometimes they will pattern good sometimes not. The slots in the CNC are made to grab the wad. Flight Control wads are made to stay with the the load down range. So, they kinda act against each other. I have had much better luck with the H.S. Undertaker and the Remington Super Full. I had the wad also hit the cardboard, but no penetration. I am guessing it was because of the angle the cardboard was laying against the carpenters horse. They would bounce off the cardboard and fly back. A few landed a few yards from my feet when shooting at 35 yards.

Re: Federal Flight Control Wad stuck in 2x4 @ 40 yards

I wrote to Federal about their new Flitecontrol shells. They suggested that you "shouldn't" use a choke that is ported or that has a wad stopper feature. They said that these type of chokes will defeat the system is most cases and a more open choke works better with the Flitecontrol. I asked about my Mossberg 835 and they suggested I start with a .665-.670 constriction without porting. Right off hand, I don't know of anybody that makes such a choke(??) Any help with this one?

I hit one pretty hard with the wad several years ago. Shot that one at 12 steps. However I'm pretty sure he was dead before the wad arrived. laugh.gif

I get great patterns out of my Winchester 1300 with factory choke. I get anywhere from 15-28 pellets per shot at 40 yards.

The best pattern all day was 16 shots in a 3" circle at 40 yards. The average was about 5.

Wow, I can average 20 bb's in a 3" circle at 40 yards...sometimes more, using Rem. Hevi-shot. shocked.gif

I know Hastings and Briley both make "non" ported chokes. I'm sure there are others on the market as well.
