How or Can you call in hens?????

I was wondering if its possible to call in hens that a gobbler may be dogging or following?

I know its hard as heck to get a gobbler to stray away from a hen if he has one or more around him. I was thinking about pulling the hen towards me with hopes the gobbler would follow.

Does anyone do this?

Is it possible or not worth the effort?

Thanks!

Same. I start out like the dueling banjos. I let her yelp, then i yelp, then after she gets a little louder i will start cutting her off durring her yelp. This really makes em mad. If they are not with a gobbler sometimes just a few clucks and purrs brings them in for a closer investigation.

i also mock the hen, but louder & meaner. really paid off 2 yrs. ago. i let out a couple soft purrs at daybreak & she came flying through the woods, & landed about 20 yards in front of us. talk about a mad hen!!!! she stayed there & just yelped & yelped at our decoys !!!!.so i put my calls down & 10 min. later we had 3 gobblers come in from 3 different directions !!!!!...looked like something on tv. it was very cool..... cool.gif

Re: How or Can you call in hens?????

To answer your question honestly, sometimes. I've had my best luck using 2 tactics.

1. Cut at them to try to get one (the boss) to cut back at you. When she cuts back cut her off cutting back again and so on. Just like wigs said you're challenging her position in the pecking order.

2. Using contentment calls like clucking and purring and throw in some leaf scracthing if you can risk moving. Sometimes hens just want the company of other hens so I'll use a couple of different slate calls to make clucks and purrs in order to sound like more than one hen. I've had hens gradually work to me doing this, some walk right in, and some that just never changed going where they just wanted to go. The biggest double beard I killed was smoked using this tactic. He was with 2 hens and they gradualy fed their way to me but it took about 45 minutes for them to travel 200 yards across a field. He had an 11 1/4" beard and a 9" beard.

I've actually had better luck using the 2nd tactic but both have worked in the past. Sometimes these tactics work but nothing is a sure thing when it comes to calling in turkeys.

I've called in tons of hens. I couldn't tell you how. But I must be a lousy caller because Toms don't seem to like me. I had one last year standing about 5 feet from me for 20-30 minutes just squawking away at my deek. It was actually kind of fun. At least something came in.
