huntn4bucks
Yep, I caught a poacher turkey hunting on my property this morning. He claimed he didn't know he was on the wrong property so I asked him if he saw the posted signs and the painted property lines. He said he did. He claimed that the guy that gave him permission to hunt his property told him that he could hunt anywhere. I told him that he was wrong and that he definitely couldn't hunt here. Anyway, long story short...I got his name and the property owner's name that he was suppose to be hunting on and told him I would give him the benefit of the doubt this time...and only this time! I know he thought no one would be in there during the week but we was wrong again. Oh yeah, the guy he was suppose to be hunting on only owns 20 acres. Talk about being ticked off early in the morning! Just had to vent! Sorry.

[/ QUOTE ] so you say it depends on how big he is. you got to watch the people you run into with in the woods. if they could tresspass and lie to you they could do anything to you to keep from getting in trouble. easy to do in the woods and get away with it. Guest ronin
Re: Caught a poacher this morning! I understand. I have exclusive rights to a 500 acre parcel near my home and had two poachers on opening day on it. They shot twice, missed I think, and hit the road. I found their tracks but they had left by the time I got in the area.
PAhardwoods
Re: Caught a poacher this morning! I think gfourhunter brings up a good point. Nobody has the right to be on somebodys land with out permission but these days you must be carefull when you come across one of these slob hunters. Rhino
Re: Caught a poacher this morning! I guess you are going to call the owner of the 20 acres to see if he really gave the guy permission. If he didn't, I'd say all bets are off about giving him the benefit of the doubt. If he did have permission and since you told him you'd let him off this time, you should honor your word. I don't know if I would have been that nice or not. It would just depend on the guy's attitude and how he handled the situation. You're the only one that knows that Tracy but don't 2nd guess yourself about it now. I would certainly tell the owner of the 20 acres that he shouldn't tell anyone he allows on his property that they can go hunt anywhere they want. Chrud
Re: Caught a poacher this morning! At least you gave him something to think about! I saw several tresspassers this year during gun season but couldn't confront any of them. One saw me shoot him the bird though.
JimT
Re: Caught a poacher this morning! Thats cool of you though to give him the benefit of the doubt. He could have made an honest mistake. If he were lieing you probably would have been able to tell. Next time though, if it happens, light him up.

huntn4bucks
Re: Caught a poacher this morning! [ QUOTE ] Was he poching or Trespassing terri sounds like a trespass situation not poaching. [/ QUOTE ] Not to get technical mike but webster defines "Poach" as: 1 : to encroach upon especially for the purpose of taking something 2 : to trespass for the purpose of stealing game; also : to take game or fish illegally Regardless of whether it's trespassing or poaching, he was somewhere that he wasn't suppose to be. redbeard
Re: Caught a poacher this morning! Yep, you got the definition right. Poaching used to be more of a common thing long ago than now. Over in Europe when all the wealthy held all the game and lands, most all the commoners that hunted, poached. I believe that when the word actually originated. Nevertheless, it's wrong now. Don't take this as a knock Tracy, but I long for olden day long ago where every corner tree didn't have a No Trepassing sign on it. Leasin' land for huntin' rights just narrowed down the opportunities for the majority. When I was young in rural NC, we could hunt anywhere. Farmers didn't mind. Hunting was a honest thing to do. You'd run into a farmer, they'd ask "How's the huntin''. Now I realize many places today would be chaois if we all could do that now. Toss your problem up to the turkey gods, forgive and forget. Fate and good deeds usually have a way of comin' back around to be on your side.
Leo
Re: Caught a poacher this morning! Even if he did have permission from the adjoining landowner. Sounds like you still have an issue with the adjoining landowner. He only has permission to grant rights to his property, not "anywhere". It is the landowners responsibility to insure those he gives permission to are cognizant of the borders of his property. I would make that point with this guy especially since the "poacher" named him as giving him permission to hunt "anywhere". If I were the landowner and had showed him the boundaries, I would yank this individuals priviledge to hunt immediately. Getting this guys name and number is key. Make sure that is legit. I hope he gave you a license to copy from. The scary thing about dealing with poachers is some are truly outlaws and retaliate by damaging property when caught. This is why securing this individuals identity is so crucial. At least two people I know of have had this very thing happen. One had his hunting cabin burned to the ground the other had his camper trailer shot up. Both had recently caught and prosecuted poachers on there lands. Unfortunately they were unable to prove the same individuals were responsible for the vandalism

When you talk to the owner you might want to ask about leasing that 20 acres just to get rid of that potential porblem. We caught a guy doing the same thing about 10 years ago and we turned him in. He was hunting 40 acres and had to cross a fence to get on us though. We eventually leased that 40 acres to get rid of that problem.
