Re: What would you do

CHECK THE DEER IN!!!!! Regardless whether deer were taken on your place or 60 miles away, your wildlife dept. needs the count, weight, and all that other info to determine what is best for the deer as a herd. Granted you are just one hunter in who knows how many but you are just as important in this aspect as any other.

If you aren't going to check them in then why buy a tag? Well mainly because its illegal and wrong. Where is the difference in completing the steps to an ethical hunt? Dont straddle the fence on this one. Doing half a right doesn't make things ok. For your peace of mind and the right to pat yourself on the back for being ethical check those things in.

Also PETA or other animal rights activist, being a thorn in our side, could use something like this to prove a point. "How ethical can it be if the wildlife department cant even get an accurate information because their strongest supporters dont take the appropriate steps?" Your buddy is wrong. The deer that run on your place and his are important to the herd populations in your state. Just because they run on your place doesn't mean they are yours for your free will.

As for processing, take your appropriate steps and let him process them for you. As long as you know you're covered then you dont have to worry about it. I know here in Oklahoma we have to have a carcass tag to prove we checked in the deer. If its the same in your state I'd rather have proof to avoid a stiff punishment.

I agree with jeramine!!! Check it in. If you don't want the earful I would not take it to him, if you don't mind the earful take it to him. Maybe if you keep at him he will see the light and start checking his in too.

Best of luck to ya! wink.gif

Re: What would you do

wtnhunt, this is a no brainer as far as I'm concerned. If you are required by the state to check in your deer, keep doing it. That's just the law so it's what you should do. If he wants to know why, just tell him "it gives you peace of mind knowing you are doing what you are supposed to" since it's required by the state. It's simply the right thing for you to do anyway. If he starts with the waste of time and gas stuff, all you have to respond with is, "I can't put a price on my peace of mind."

I rather get an earful from the guy instead of a game warden and judge. That is if checking the deer in is required by law. If it's just for info purposes only and only suggested, then I wouldn't either.

Re: What would you do

I would do what the law requires!

Let me get this strait though, every dear you shoot you have to get it weighed and aged? Never heard of that before! We just shoot our deer and the wildlife office sends out a letter asking certain people the size[antlers] and were it was shot and if we want we send it back! Also eack sept-dec there is about 3-5 guys in each area [me included] that do surveys for the game department saying how many and what size, and how many fawns with does and dry does, we see each day afield, and how many in each group and what area!

Re: What would you do

i don't think that's a tough call at all, but i don't know the law in Tenn.

in Ohio, you can take deer off your land without buying a tag, but you still have to tag and check it.

it it's the law in Tenn. to check the deer, then check it, and just smile when the old timer gives you an earful. if it really bothers him, i suppose someday he'll just tell you that he won't processs a checked deer, and that's the time when you need to find a new processor.

follow the law my friend, that would be my advice. grin.gif

Re: What would you do

To make the matter easier on all, I would check the deer in (cause that is the right thing to do) then before dropping it off at his place I would take the band or tag off of it from being checked so he is none the wiser.

This way you are a law abiding hunter but don't have to listen to his lectures about doing the wrong thing.

Yep, we check in every deer we kill. They have to be weighed and usually there is someone training to be a ranger there to "pull the jaw." They literally pull the lower jaw out and keep it to study the teeth, age, and health of the animals. We also have to report what county we took it from so they can keep accurate records. They always ask if they can pull the jaw, it isn't required. Each animal downed is issued a "Carcass-tag" with all of the information to show it wasn't an illegal kill. Deer are the only animals they remove part of for study.

We have to do the same with several animals from bobcat to turkey....although they dont pull the jaw on turkey! grin.gif
