Guest kracey
I need help figuring out if my arrow weight is enough for whitetail deer and if my Kenetic Energy is enough for expandables. My arrow length is 26.5" and they weigh (7.5GPI) my bow draw weight is 55-57 pounds. And the head would either be 100 or 125 grains. Arrow speed is unknown, Can someone help me. I am looking at getting either the Crimison Black Mamba (1 1/16" cutting )(100 grain) or the steelhead-XP (1 1/4" cutting )(125 Grians)

Guest kracey
Re: Is my arrow weight and KE enough? My biggest concern is about the KE. I have heard people talking about if you dont have enough the heads wont work. So i was hoping to find out my KE to make sure everything would work ok. 1olhunter
Re: Is my arrow weight and KE enough? Kenetic energy is a function of the overall mass of the arrow, including broadhead and the velocity of the arrow. So you need to know the speed of the arrow from your bow. Many pro shops will let you chronograph your setup. Once you know your arrow speed use the following formula to calculate the KE. G=Grains of arrow wieght including broadhead V=velocity KE=(G*V*V)/450800
Guest foulmouthfool
Re: Is my arrow weight and KE enough? well a 100 grain head would put you around 310-315 grains total arrow weight. Lets just guess that you are shooting 230 fps that would give you 37 foot lbs. OK, lets say you are shooting 250 fps............I doubt its that high, but just for arguments sake lets say 250fps............that gives you 44 foot lbs of energy. 240, about 40 ft lbs I say stay away from mechanicals of ANY type and shoot something thats cut on contact. You may hear of some people with energy that low blowing right through both lungs and ribs with mechs...........but those are few and far between. You might get lucky, but do yourself and the game you pursue a favor and shoot a fixed blade head.
