muggs
Now I realize that certain states, even specific areas within those states are known for producing huge bucks. But in your opinion, do you think to much is made out of these areas, or do you think it's legit? If I had a dollar for everytime I've heard someone say, "I'd give anything to hunt Pike County" I'd own property there. I know Sask, producing numerous monsters every year, so let's keep that out of the discussion. Do you honestly believe hunting in Pike County...the Milk River will give you a better chance to tag a booney? Or do you believe any decent deer state will produce big deer? Chrud
Re: Your Opinion: I wouldn't mind hunting Pike County, Illinois. I'm sure it's great, but the #1 county for Pope & Young Whitetails is Buffalo County, Wisconsin. If I decided to book a hunt, I'd go there first. I love hunting in Wisconsin. I think certain areas have bigger deer than others. Sure that might help you some, but you would still have to do your homework to get on a big buck. With the right management, I think just about anywhere can have big bucks. But personally, I like hunting close to home with friends and family. AaronS
Re: Your Opinion: Yes, I believe a person has a better chance of tagging a wallhanger in areas like Pike County, IL, Buffalo County, WI, etc. because these areas are more strictly managed for QDM than most other areas, and have the genetics to go along with it. Orion_70
Re: Your Opinion: Well, that's kinda sticky.. Genetics plays a lot into large racked bucks..Having said that though, nutrition and age play just as heavy a role. You have to have a combination of all 3 to really get Big deer..In states where the deer aren't allowed to grow very old because of hunging pressure and thus never reach their prime age you won't have big deer. Some states just don't have the mineral quality or genetics to produce really Big rack deer either. If you're allowed to put out mineral supplements, let the deer grow and have decent genetics then you can get some really nice deer.
MUDRUNNER
Re: Your Opinion: Most places in Pike county are strictly managed and give you a big penalty to pay if you take a buck smaller than 130".That allows for a lot more mature bucks to be in that area.Any place with good nutrition and food has potential to produce big bucks, but places with QDM will normally produce a lot more big deer and increase your chances at bagging one. muggs
Re: Your Opinion: [ QUOTE ] Obviously a lot of that comes down to a numbers game. You are obviously going to stand a better chance of shooting a trophy buck someplace like the Milk River where you are going to see 200 of them! I've lived and hunted here in west-central IL all my life and I yet to EVER see a field filled with mature bucks like a Milk River Realtree video!!! [/ QUOTE ] Videos can be misleading. And BTW- how come Ohio is always left out of the big buck convo? I think it's right up there with the Iowa, Illinois, Wisc. IMHO

The thing is, the big bucks from Indiana and Ohio are not as common as the three states mentioned because our states are more populated, leaving less big chunks of land to be managed for QDM. While our states have the potential to produce wallhangers just as big as the three states you mentioned, they won't produce as many per square mile until enough people start managing for it. Your original question was if there was a better chance in those areas. It boils down to your chances are better when there are more shooters per given area. Ohiobucks
Re: Your Opinion: [ QUOTE ] how come Ohio is always left out of the big buck convo? [/ QUOTE ] Cause there aren't any big ones in Ohio, remember? No reason for out-of-staters coming to Ohio to shoot a big one, they don't exist here............. Born4it
Re: Your Opinion: Being from Illinois and hunting fairly close to Pike, Adams, Brown, and those powerhouse counties I'd be a little biased, but I say yes, you have a much better chance of shooting a booner in Illinois or Iowa than in many other states. People in my state take for granted the fact that we have a chance to hunt HUGE deer!! I'm sure everyone saw pictures of Dexter's Buck (the Macomb Monster, which is where I'm from, Macomb), and he was hunting in McDonough county which isn't even considered a great, great county in IL. Now that I'm on my pedistal, I'd also like to point out the fact that my best friend's girlfriend checked that deer in at the station VERY COOL PICS SHE BROUGHT OVER THAT NIGHT!!!! As for Alberta, Sask, Montana, South Texas...I'm sure that you'd have a better shot at a big deer there than a lot of other states just because of all the hearsay. People wouldn't talk about it SO much if it wasn't a little bit true at least. Another thing we have to realize is that it depends on your herd, your ground, etc. i.e. If you use Quality Deer Management techniques and plant minerals for your deer, your chances would increase no matter what state you live in. That's way more than my 2 cents, hope it helped!! Good luck! Ryan
RatherBowHunt
Re: Your Opinion: My brother and I had inherited some money from my grandmother and 250 acres in Pike County came up for sale and it was hardcore timber....the owner never hunted it so he just wanted to get rid of it and it hadn't been hunted for at least 15 years.....my brother and i babied it for five years taking all does and no bucks no matter the size and last year we finally decided to take a buck or two....i got a 145inch 10 pointer...and my little brother shot a 156inch 11 pointer....we also so two 8 pointers that would easily go 140's and we saw three bucks that may go in the mid 160's.....i had one 17 yards but just couldnt get a shot.....thats Pike County for ya!!!! It definately is what they say it is!!!

Funny all the guys on that show shot where a couple of skippers.
IowaDeerHunter
Re: Your Opinion: I would haveto say that tey have a better chance of shooting bigger deer in area like the MR and Pike County, IL. if you watch the Realtree videos when they hunt the MR they see more Boone and crockett deer than most other places. As for Pike couinty and some other spots, it is also to do with good QDM.
