Homosexual elementary students????

I was talking with a friend this morning when she took a call from our local elementary school. She told me her son had been suspended for the day. I guess her son and a good friend of his call each other "gay" just joking around. (I don't agree with it, but it's not my kid....) I guess someone overheard this and told on him. He was suspended for the day for using the word "gay". The principal told my friend that there is a large number of homosexual students in the school (grades K-7) and they are very sensitive to this word.

My question is this....How does an elementary student know he/she is gay??? I still thought boys had cooties when I was that young!!!! And since when is "gay" a bad word?

I would consider myself one of the more liberal minded forum members, but I just don't get this one! A boy in my son's class was just in trouble for throwing stuff at a girl that had just "broken up" with him and called her a bunch of names when my son stepped in and told him you don't treat females like that. Nothing happened to this child, but if you say gay you get suspended????

Re: Homosexual elementary students????

Now that right there is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

This teacher shouldn't be teaching for one thing. To say there are gay students in an elementary school, is ludicrous. I for one, do not believe that anyone is born gay. After hearing this, you can easily see how some children can grow up thinking they are, because of what they have been told by their peers and above all, their teachers.

That teacher is way out of line.

As far as kids calling other kids gay, I don't think it is appropriate either, and they should be disciplined for it. The word gay, may be appropriate in an adult setting, but it shouldn't be used as a taunting or accusation word by children.

Just my opinion crazy.gif

Re: Homosexual elementary students????

wow, i think its pretty stupid to suspend an elementary kid for joking around with one of his peers. and i also don't believe that an elementary student can be "gay". i do not think that children that age can relize that they're gay at that age. and for someone to suspend a student because they used that word is pretty crazy. when i was in elementary school, and we used inappropriate language, we would get sent to the principal's office and get a tongue rashin, thats a bout it. gay isnt even a "bad word" so why the heck could someone be in the right mind to suspend a student for this. pretty rediculous if you ask me..... confused.gifcrazy.gif

Re: Homosexual elementary students????

Once again, minority rules!

I do believe elementary students have the ability to understand their sexual orientation. But as you said, when did "gay" become a bad word?

I understand the connotations, but there is a legitimate meaning to it. Besides, there are slang terms that are used to describe homosexuals that are much worse.

I'm moving to Canada, who's coming with me eh?

Re: Homosexual elementary students????

That is just ludicrous.

I also feel that there should be discipline but suspension for saying "gay" is a bit over the top.

Oh and just to clear up the homosexual elementary student thing...

No, elementary students do not yet have the maturity in terms of biological maturation of the brain and hormone systems to legitimatly decide if they are homosexualy oriented.

Don't make me add the "initials" after my name...just trust me wink.gif.

Suspended for saying gay? Thats pretty bad. If it were my kid I would be so mad. They could have been saying much worse than that. Does a kid that says the f word get expelled there or something. Wow.

Re: Homosexual elementary students????

This doesnt hardly suprise me.Schools are designed now so nobody gets thier feelings hurt.

They wont let you use Gods name in the school anymore for fear a minority kid might tell thier parents.

Theyve got sports in elementary school now but they dont keep score and nobody wins or loses. The first year theres not even any outs, everyone gets to bat till they hit the ball.

Ive heard of a little boy that was suspended because he kissed a girl in class

Ive heard of older kids being suspended for giving a friend an aspiran for thier headache, apparently thats against the drug policy.

Why wouldnt they suspend a kid for using a word he probably doesnt even know the full meaning of.

These kids are gonna be pretty poorly equiped to deal with the real world IMO and it just gets worse.

Re: Homosexual elementary students????

I understand what you're saying, but doesn't gay mean happy?. I would play the "your suspended my child because he called another child happy?" I can't beleive what is happening to this country. I don't agree with what the children did, but come on, they are young kids. And we all know that kids will be kids.

Re: Homosexual elementary students????

We discussed a little about this before in the political forum on a different subject I believe Linda. My daughter got a newsletter home from the school a couple months back and in it they said there was a problem with abusive language and it would not be tolerated. This is grade K-4 mind you and one of the examples they used that they said was a big problem is the expression "this is so gay" . I have never heard my kids say that and have never used that expression myself, but apparently it is offending someone. I honestly dont think it is about the kids at that level. Maybe it is the teachers in some cases who are complaining and feeling subjected to this use of seemingly harmless language. We were informed in this newsletter to NOT use any racist terms, profanity, or language of such as our children will repeat it. Even if I did use that type of language, what right does the school really have to tell me and other parents what we can and cannot say?

In all honesty, I think it is a terrible shame that an elementary school has to send home this type of thing and that a kid at that age can be used like this by adults with motives for pushing their alternate lifestyles.

Happened to me. Ive been able to talk my way out of a suspension, but ive gotten detention. I get migraines, and i have excedrin migrane in my locker. Another kid had a headache, who was a good friend of mine, so I gave him an aspirin, except an old cranky teacher of mine seen me giving it to him. I got in trouble for it. Kinda sad, Kyle isnt allergic to aspirin, and he takes aspirin for headaches, yet they kept saying that he couldve had an allergic reaction. When youre a senior in High School. 17 years old at the time, im pretty sure, you know if you can or cannot take an aspirin.

I would bet, in this case, the word "gay" was found more offensive to an "alternative" faculty member than the elementary school students.........
