Diabetic and Heart Problems! SHEESH!!! Why Now?

Ok, I wasn't going say anything! My doctor has dealt me two major blows. One, he told me I am now diabetic. I am taking low dosage insulin for type 2 diabetes. Two, I also have a block in my heart, that is requiring a heart cath! I have no idea when this will happen, but hopefully soon. I am just letting you all know just incase something happens here. Not going to lie, I am a little scared of the heart cath. Plus I have no ideas what will happen after the cath.

I only found this out on Tuesday. Three or four weeks ago I had some chest pains. So I thought I better get it checked. Doc ordered a Thallium Stress Test. You run on this treadmill, once your heart rate reaches over 152 beats per minute, they send in this radioactive drug called Thallium. The thallium attaches to the red blood cells, which when viewed under this machine lights up your blood vessels. Well, I failed the test, there was a dark spot somewhere in my heart. This is why they feel now they need to go internal! So here comes the heart cath, they make a small incision in your thigh, then go into the femoral artery, from there they go straight to the heart! If they find any or all blocks they will attempt to open them if possible. The dangers of this, if a piece break free I could have a major heart attack, stroke, or an embolism. All this could not have been timed more at a bad time! My uncle is re-cooperating right now from a heart operation, he had a torn aorta artery, which he had a piece of something got loose and lodged in his brain. He was in a coma for three weeks. So yeah, I am scared as H*** right now!

I kind of like to keep my personal life off the net, but for some reason, I feel I need to get this off my chest! Hopefully this will get resolved quickly! You all are great to be around! So if for some reason I am not here for a while, you all will know why!

Heart caths are not as dangerous as they appear to be! I have had 9 of them and 8 angioplasties! 7 stents in my right cornary artery!

The worst thing about the cath is that you have to lay perfectly still for a period of time! Like 3 to 6 hours flat on your back! Can't move your legs or lift them! Can't lift your head or arms! That is not fun!

You will be a little sore in your groin, but it isn't any big thing!

If you smoke or chew, you had better quit!

Good luck and if you want any more info, send me a PM!

Re: Diabetic and Heart Problems! SHEESH!!! Why Now?

Sorry to hear all this John. My dad just went thru a cardiac cath 4 weeks ago to check the condition of a by-pass that was done 5 years ago. Like OJR said... the worst part was he had to lay still for 4 hours afterward. It ends up being an all day affair. He was sore the next day, but he was up and around.

Good luck bud. Keep us updated. Take care of yourself, I plan on beating you fair and square to the Cabela's booth at the Easter Sports Show, in PA next year!!!!!! grin.gif

Sorry to hear about your recent medical problems. I care for patients daily that have heart caths and such. Its easy and a piece of cake. The latest technology can have you up and walking in 2 hrs. The can use something called a vasoseal or angioseal that plugs the hole in the artery so you can get up quicker. The procedure itself is nothing. You will feel a warmth when they inject the contrast during the test and if they do the balloon procedure you might feel some chest tightness and pain just briefly. Its better that you have it now and get the problem fixed while its fixable. As far as the diabetes watch your diet, keep your feet in good shape and you will be fine. Its very important to keep your blood suger down, its causes heart problems, vascular disease, and can cause blindness. But if you keep that glucose down to below 180 you wont have to worry about a thing. The torn aorta your uncle had was a freak thing, I have taken care of thousands of patients that have had the procedure and the worse complication I have seen is bleeding at the insertion site. Its a breeze, Good luck and if you ever have and questions feel free to send it my way. Take care

Re: Diabetic and Heart Problems! SHEESH!!! Why Now?

John, keep your chin up. The cath (depending on your hospital) is a rather quick procedure. And hopefully, like Bama said, they will use an angioseal device, which will allow you to be up and walking quite quickly. We will certainly keep you in our prayers that not only does the test go well, but that no blockages are observed... Just a little soap box preaching for all you 50 something guys... and on up... both diabetes and heart disease are preventable, so if your overweight, make it your goal to change your diet and increase your exercise. Good new is John, if your diabetes is due to being a little "heavy", you will probably be able to get off of the insulin by decreasing your weight to a healthy level (of course, I don't recommend any action until you talk with your doc.)

Best of luck... you'll do great.
