I have been looking to buy a varmint rifle for quite some time now. I was looking for a 22-250 and never even gave a 243 a look before I started shooting my little brother's 243. He's got a Ruger youth version 243 and that thing is awesome. I haven't shot it over 200 yards yet but out to that I am a deadeye. I also looked at the ballistics for both guns and the 243 beats the 22-250 with 55 grain bullets. It dropped about 2 in more than the 250 at 500 yards but it had more power and speed even out at far distances. I was just wondering what other people thought about the 243's. Any goods or bads on the gun?

Re: 243

My opinion is that the .243 isn't the ideal varmint round, but it will more than do the job. It isn't the ideal deer round, but it will do the job. Bullet placement is super critical. It isn't ideal for either purpose, but it is a very versatile round that will work for both.

Re: 243

My buddys 700 .243 with I believe 70, maybe 80 grain bullets is deadly out to 400 yards. He shot a coyote from 407 yards with his. That dog hit the ground like it got dropped out of a plane. I think the .243 makes a great varmint round. Buy one and you will have a great duel purpose rifle.
