Nut
I used to be a member at the Toledo Zoo for years. I allowed the membership to lapse for various reasons. Well I got a letter from them wanting me to rejoin. So I thought about it and when I was going to it I enjoyed it and the Lights before Christmas event wwas always great. However what is bothering me is the polar bear exhibit where I watched one who just kept pacing back and forth in a space of about 20 feet. It is a bigger area tha that but the bear just paces in that area. It actually sickens me that a critter who roams for many miles is penned up in a small area. So which way should I go ? Join and never attend the exhibit or do not join?

buckee
Re: Zoo membership You know Nut, I feel the same way about some of the animals that are kept in confinement like that, and I'm sure everyone does (especially the anti's)...but...ya know, Zoo's allow millions upon millions of people who would never, as long as they lived, ever get the opportunity to see such an awesome creature. Zoos have come a long ways since we were young and I hope to see them get even better in the future. Zoo's and aquariums are an awesome viewing and learning tool for millions, old and young alike. Tominator
Re: Zoo membership Join. With reduced membership, his conditions won't get better, but if enough people join, maybe his conditions will improve. Plus, it's tax deductible. OJR
Re: Zoo membership Join and tell them what you think of that exhibit. It might do some good! Zoo's have their place and there is a great benefit to them!
archerjg
Re: Zoo membership If you join you may be able to get the exhibit changed for the better. Archerjg
TreeStandBowHunter
Re: Zoo membership Thats on you bud but I know one thing, zoo's need to make sure they give their critters enough room depending on what kind of animal it is. JMO I'll tell you this though, the worst zoo I was ever at was over in Okinawa. Man, that place needed shut down. The animals were not cared for very well. PETA would of had a good ol time over there.

HuntingInMaine
Re: Zoo membership I have to agree with the "join and see what good you can do" opinions. Maybe you could start a fund raising project to build a larger area for the polar bear. Think of all the good people could do if they took their concerns one step further and did something about it! It's easy to think something would be better if only someone would do something about it. But it is a great feeling when you go one step further and DO something to change the way things are. And I am sure you could easily find lots of help....if you thought the bear looked sad, then I am sure you are not the first to think that. There must be lots of others that would be happy to help, they just need to be asked!
Newarcher
Re: Zoo membership Better yet, volunteer at the zoo. Then, wait until everyone else leaves for the night and let some of the gazelles into the lion cage. That would be a cool sight! New
craig mack
Re: Zoo membership I would join. A matter of fact I think my wife already has. Toledo has a beautiful Zoo I like it better than Detroits.
