Anyone use a Mountain Bike to get into their area

Here in Rhode Island the public land has gates at the borders and motorized vehicles are not permitted on State land. So I was wondering if anyone uses a Mountain Bike to get into their hunting areas? If so what type of gadgets or modifications have you made to your bike to accomodate carrying a gun or bow or other gear? Thanks

I walk in too. The area I hunt it would be impossible to bike in in the dark. Very rocky, very steep. The noise alone would alert everything within a half mile...lol.

Last September mountain biking in a forest near my house. I'm coming down a rocky incline, with a mudhole on the bottom. Making a ton of noise. I get thru the mud, and stop on the other side for a drink. About 10 seconds after I stop, about 10 yards to my left, there is a noise. I look up, and it is a huge 8 pointer, sneaking away. I'm pretty sure the mountain bike noise didn't really bother him, and he was gonna hang tight untill I stopped.

LOL. Doc. Yes I have an ATV too but I can't use them on State land. Like I said the terrain here is mostly flat and there are a ton of mountain bikes out there. I don't think the sound of the bike would spook deer because of the fact that there are so many of them riding through all the time.

My brother rides a bike and pulls a tree lounge with all his gear on it bow, extra cloths, etc. With wheels on the tree lounge makes its pretty easy to get your

deer back out to the road.

Re: Anyone use a Mountain Bike to get into their area

My land is quite skinny but almost a mile long and my entire southern property line borders state land. So, I can drive the ATV to the top of the hil and then walk wherever I want once I am up at the top.

Our little chunk of state land (640 acres) allows mountain biking all summer, but not as soon as the hunting seasons start. I don't know whether that is the idea of the DEC or Mountain-bike club that builds and maintains the trails. But there is a sign down by the parking lot that shows the time of year that mountain bikes can be used there.

Some of the hills that those guys have to bike up are just plain ridiculous. I can't imagine how they do it, but they do. There are also some trails on the side of the hill that are quite dangerous. Some of them are little skinny trails with some very steep drop-offs. I expect to read about somebody going over the edge some day.

One thing I will say is that the trails are great for stalking. In the fall, they generally do not hold the leaves like the rest of the woods, so you have all these trails with bare dirt, no leaves and no twigs. You can walk along these things without making a sound. Unfortunately, so can everyone else, and it doesn't take too long for the deer to be aware of these. However, if you want to get from one section of woods to the other, fast and without spooking everything in the area, walking along these trails is the way to do it.

I have a couple of spots a real long way back into the woods that I hunt from time to time,, would hunt them more often if the trek wasn't so long, but I never thought about a mountain bike. That's a great idea, especially since my spots each are just off fairly wide "fire trails" that are definately "bike-able". I may give that a try this year.

i dont know about using a mountain bike to go hunting, but i use mine to scout for deer all the time. it is easy to sneak around dirtroads and field edges near dark and watch big bucks. for some reason they arent that afraid of bikes. plus its good excercise.
