horst Posted April 5, 2005 Report Share Posted April 5, 2005 My dad was diagnosed with liver cancer about 2 months ago.Where the tumors at is on a main vessel going into the liver, its causing him to retain a lotta fluid and hes been unable to work since then.They started a new chemo treatment on him down in Iowa City, thats only available through them or Rochester up in Minnesota.They run a tube in and dump the chemo right on the tumor, then they dump sand over the top of the chemo, the sand kills the small blood vessels that feed the tumor and keep it from spreading.When they did the first one a month ago they were just hoping to keep it from spreading, but the last MRI showd it worked beter then they hoped and actually killed off part of the tumor.So hes been going down to Iowa City 2 times a month and not able to work, he applied for Social Security but that wont kick in till Sept.Then things started happening that made me real happy i live in a small town. First a guy we are friends with and have done a lotta work for called him and said he was leaving in his semi, but there was a envelope down at the convieence store he left for dad.It had a couple hundred dollars in it. Then he went grocery shopping with mom a week later and ran into another guy we know while he was sitting in the car waiting.They visited for awhile and the guy slipped him anoher check to help pay for gas and the motel rooms for thier next trip. Then my sisters new husband heard my mom say something about their car not being able to make that many trips back and forth to Iowa City.His dad owns a car dealship and they set dad up with a loaner to get back and forth in to his appointments. Anothe lady we are friends with and have done a lotta work for contacted our church about setting up a fundraiser later this month.Were gonna have a free will offering meal, bake sale and all the local businuesses contributed items to donate for an auction.Then businuesses outside of town started donating stuff.The cattlemens association agreed to do all the cooking and will be grilling hamburgers.Another lady here donated a handmade quilt to raffle off.Last night at the meeting one of dads old friends sent a check for 500$ to cover the cost of the meat..weve had local farmers donate quarters of beef to auction off.Most of this has happened wthin the last week.The benifits gonna be on the 24th of this month, and the Lutheran brotherhoods pledged to donate matching funds for what ever we take in.Its been a pretty awesome experience so far. Heres one of the items were gonna auction off.Me, dad and my brother have built a few of these for different things, mostly family but we donate one to a Ducks Unlimited auction a few years ago that went for over 500$.These round top trunks are all handmade, come with a wood base to sit them on.Everythings routered and dato'ed together so theyre very solid.The one were making for the auctions gonna be similiar to this one . I also come from a pretty tight nit community and last week when my wife had her wreck and could not get up off the couch one of our nieghbors came down and laid down $40 on the table in front of her and told her that if we needed anymore help to get in contact with her. I am very thankful that there are still people in the world like that. I hope your father makes a speedy recovery and we will keep him in our prayers. Sometimes its a pain in the rear that everyone knows everything about everybody, but there is no other place I would rather live. Your father must be a pretty great guy too, for others to help out like they have. It's great that your dad is responding so well to the treatment.
