AJ
While each gun is different, this is an aproximate scale of the deltas. These assume a barrel length of 24". Any barrel length change (plus or minus) will result in the following changes: CENTERFIRE RIFLE VELOCITY VS. BARREL LENGTH Muzzle Velocity Range (ft./sec.) ..........Approx. Change in Muzzle Velocity per 1" Change in Barrel Length (ft./sec.) 2000-2500 .............. 10 2500-3000 .............. 20 3000-3500 .............. 30 3500-4000 .............. 40 Your actual numbers may be slightly higher or lower than this, depending on the barrel and cartridge. Since your 30-30 Win fits in the first catagory, 2000-2500 fps, you can subtract 40-60 fps. The same goes for the 7.62x39.
lil hunter
Re: muzzle length Aj, i'm kinda confused with your chart. Does that mean a 10 inch barrel will shoot approx 2000-2500 fps, 20"barrel shooters 2500-3000 fps and so on? Or am I totally lost?
lil hunter
Re: muzzle length ok so like. If your shooting between 3000-3500 fps, and you increase your barrel length by an inch, you will be getting 30 more fps?? I think i get it now. [/ QUOTE ] Yep, you got it! The chart is based on velocity numbers with a 24" barrel. This is what most reloding manuals and factory loaded ballistics use. If your barrel is shorter or longer you add or subtract the corresponding number. Examples: If you are shooting a 30-30 Win (which has a typical MV of 2300 fps in a 24" barrel) in a gun that has a 22" barrel, you will loose about 20 fps. If you are shooting a 30-06 with 180 grain bullets (which has a typical MV of 2700 fps in a 24" barrel) in a rifle with a 26" barrel you will gain ~40 fps. If you are shooting a 223 Rem with 50 gr bullets (which has a typical MV of 3300 fps in a 24" barrel) in a rifle with a 16" barrel you will loose ~240 fps. If you are shooting a 300 RUM with 165 gr bullets (which has a typical MV of 3500 fps in a 26" barrel) from a gun with a 22" barrel you should see a doctor because you have brain damage.
