Top Fuel Dragster

The NHRA drag racing series is in Houston this weekend. Yesterday evening, I went to race go carts at a track near the drag strip and quite a few crew members and one top fuel driver showed up and turned left with us.

The driver, John Smith, spent quite a bit of time talking with us, real down to earth guy. While he isn't one of the real famous, high budget teams, he is out there competing with them and had some interesting comments. He told us if we come to the race, to be sure and come by his trailer and talk to him.

Here is a profile off of the NHRA website of him.

Career Highlights

2004: Finished just outside the POWERade Top 10 in 11th place; Qualified a season-high seventh at Denver

2003: Advanced to first final round (Gainesville); recorded career-best performance numbers in time and speed; finished in POWERade Top 10 for second time in his career

2002: Posted first career top 10 points finish; Along with wife Rhonda, became the first husband-wife duo to finish in top 10 in any pro category

2001: He and wife, Rhonda, became the first husband-and-wife duo to qualify in the same professional category at an event (Bristol); As the result of a crash with Gary Scelzi at Brainerd, did not compete for the remainder of the season

1998: Made professional debut at Gainesville where he qualified 13th and lost in the first round to Joe Amato

Re: Top Fuel Dragster

That's pretty cool Chuck.

They run the nationals over in a little town called Kikersville, which is about 20 miles as the crow flies from me. If you get within about 7 or 8 miles of that place, you can actually hear the top fuels and funny cars going down the track--they are loud!

One of these days I'm going to have to go down there. I need to see a NASCAR, IRL, and NHRA event before I die, I've one CART race so far.
