Nemesis, 3 Years later

This is the best hunt of the year to date. It did not start out well because it was raining and we were soaked. I took my good friend, Kevin, out for his second day at the birds. He got a real nice Tom that I posted yesterday and he wanted a shot at another.

I decided to set Kevin up in an area where he had his first run in with turkey. That moment, three years ago, was less than memorable to say the least. Kevin missed a beautiful Tom and he never heard the end of it.

Kevin got another chance at his Nemesis this morning. He took the same bird he missed those years past and dropped him like a bad habit. The shot was 50 yards though neither of us expected the distance. The shear size of the bird ruined Kevin’s ability to calculate the range well. He weighed 24.5 LBs., had long, hooked spurs, with a 10” beard. Kevin took him with his Remington 870 3.5” loaded with Winchester Supreme #4’s.

Here’s Kevin’s trophy which we are taking to the taxidermist this morning.

Re: Nemesis, 3 Years later

Kevin says thanks to all.

I know this bird is the same because I have been watching him and his four, now one, flock mates over the last 3 years. I can't explain exactly how he stands out without going into huge detail but it is kind of like how a person can differentiate between an individual dog out of several of the same breed when they are all together. They have their own mannerisims, they all look slightly different, etc.

This group started out as four impressive Toms all the way to last fall or winter. They stayed together everywhere and throughout the season. Somwhere along the way, two of the four disappeared. My guess is they were finally bobcat bait as their home turf is also thick with cats and the turkey are their primary food source.

I spend a lot of time on these ranches and I know the game almsot as well as I recognize the cattle.

Cool man, that explains alot to me then, hope you didn't think I was being a smart a##, trust me, that wasn't the intent of my question.

Re: Nemesis, 3 Years later

Actually, Gator's question made me think a little. This bird had a decent beard when I first saw him way back when-probably a two year old. Add three years to it. This is an old bird!

Re: Nemesis, 3 Years later

Congrats to you and Kevin on a great hunt. You know what they say about payback. 3 years is a long time to wait to pay that bird back too. That mount will look great and will remind him of a lot of memories chasing that bird around the countryside.
