Re: still hunting deer

I got my first deer by still hunting. Of course that was a lot of years ago. I haven't had a lot of luck with that method since. With age, I seem to be getting more and more clumsy and less coordinated. I think I've lost my "sneak". crazy.gif

Re: still hunting deer

This year I managed to bag a one while still huntin. Managed to sneak to within 25 yards using trees, brush and bushes as cover. A couple of times I was crawling on my hands and knees and the the final approach took quite some time. It was the first one I've managed to get stillhunting and a big thrill for me.

Re: still hunting deer

Ive killed a lotta deer stillhunting with my bow.Killed my biggest buck to date after seeing him lie down in a fence line and sneaking in on him.My first deer with a bow was a huge doe i got while stillhunting a standing cornfield.Ive taken a lot of does and a few bucks in between while stillhunting. Its actually one of my favorite methods of hunting.

I guesse Im lucky in a way though, we have enough deer around here I dont worry to much about blowing a stalk or spooking a deer while Im sneaking through the field, and it gives me a lotta time to practice and try new things out.

Re: still hunting deer

I shot my first buck with a bow while still hunting a few years ago.A nice eight pointer.I was sneaking along the edge of a food plot during the rut and saw three bucks chasing a doe,so i grunted a few times and and used my estrous bleat can call and one of the bucks turned and walked right to the edge of the field at 20 yards. It is definately an exciting way to hunt.

Re: still hunting deer

Could have one day.

On real windy days I'll go out and stalk deer, in the corn usually, and try and sneak up on them. In 2002 I snuck up on a decent little 8 pt. It took about 2 hours to go from 100 yards down to about 30 before I decided I didn't want to shoot him, he just wasn't quite big enough. I wish you could have seen his eyes when I stood up at full draw. LOL.

That same day, as I walked out of the corn patch, I bumped yet another deer. This one was a heavier, longer, and taller 8pt. I would have shot him for sure, but he was much smarter, he put the slip on me big time. Tried to circle him, but never saw him again.

Re: still hunting deer

I've only hunted with a bow for one season. All I do is still-hunt when I bowhunt. I'm too impatient to sit in a treestand or groundblind. I stalked a lot of deer and got in the red zone on good mule deer bucks 4 times. The first one was the biggest and I mis-judged the distance (thought it was 25 yards but it was actually 33) and missed underneath him. This is a photo I took of his antlers while I was waiting for him to get out of his bed. You have to look close but his antlers are right of center in the photo.

The next two got away without me drawing my bow. CLB would have got a pretty good photo of me sneaking up 18 yards away from the third one, but his camera malfunctioned. I got lucky on the fourth one when his preoccupation with rubbing his antlers allowed me to move in the final 15 yards. This is him - unfortunately my camera batteries had frozen up so I didn't get any field photos.

Re: still hunting deer

I've killed a few still hunting, last season I shot a mature piebald doe still hunting.

I make out much better percentage wise still hunting with the gun,but still enjoy it with the bow.

Later in the rifle season last season I shot a 6pt. still hunting.
