Proposals could shake up deer hunting

OUTDOORS COLUMN

After 20 public meetings and a multitude of e-mails, phone calls and petitions, DEC has come up with a new proposal for next year’s deer season. The following changes have been submitted for the final rule-making process.

Instead of a muzzle-loading season during the middle of archery season, as previously suggested, the proposal is for a primitive, muzzle-loading, anterless-only deer season Oct. 10-12. Hunting implements will be determined but probably be limited to flint locks or side locks without scopes.

No in-line muzzleloaders will be allowed. This will be implemented with the Deer Management Permits, so I’m not sure how it will actually work.

The Southern Zone Archery Season will start three days after that on Saturday, Oct. 15, and run through Nov. 18. Regular firearms season will start Nov. 19 (the third Saturday of the month) and run until Dec. 11. The Late Archery and Muzzleloader Seasons will run Dec. 12-20.

If you don’t like this proposal, e-mail, write or call the DEC right away.

Well it turns out there will be no early ML season. It was printed in our paper today. But if there was, what would have been your opinion on banning in-lines in NY for special season ?

I wouldn't like it. I'm sure the vast majority use in-lines these days, and alot of us have poor eyesight and open sights just don't cut it frown.gif I guess it would be like limiting archery season to just recurves and long bows. You would sure have the woods to yourself, I doubt if many would go buy another muzzleloader just for a short season.

I wouldn't like it either, but I kept my .54 TC Renegade just in case. Besides I like taking it out and shooting the sidelock too!

Yep, I feel if any states enacts laws like that (primitive only), they should do the same thing for bow hunters. Only traditional equipment during the peak hunting time.

Oh yeah, I bowhunt. I started shooting archery in 1972 and started bowhunting in 1980. I have taken quite a few deer with the stick shooter.

My rational for that statement is they [bowhunters] have the longest seasons, they get first seasons at game, and generally have decent weather during their season. Yet with all of these benefits, they still cry about having to share the woods in the time period where early muzzleloader season and archery overlaps. they want the rut to themselves. I know that not every bowhunter feels this way. But I have heard it so often here in VA and even here on the forums. Typically the biggest opponents to early ML season are archers.
